Iâve been using the 9300 for just over a year now. I had the old big brick version before and the newer sleek design is such advancement I have just got to take my hat off to Nokia.
Iâll start with the telephone functions. Itâs a very capable cellular phone with many great features. The front cover is the simplest to use and make calls with. With the simple trade mark Nokia menu its breeze to use and navigate.
Opening the clamshell reveals a 4 inch full colour screen and full keyboard. Branded as a thumb-pad because of the way you use 2 thumbs to crash out your communications. Its the fastest thing since....well a full keyboard.
8 Hot keys are available to access Desk, Telephone, Messaging, Web, Contacts, Documents, calendar and one user definable key (Iâve got mine set to the MP3 player)
Whilst in a call with the clamshell open activates loud-speaker / hands-free telephone mode. With the clearest and most useable sound I have ever found on any phone.
The Desk(top) is fully customisable and has a stick note function, meaning you never need a pen and paper for quick shopping lists and such ever again.
The next hot key Telephone is a bit odd as it does everything you can do in the contacts menu. With the exception of editing stuff. Could have been used for something else in my opinion.
The Fax machine is a great image based transmission little do-hicky. Works well. Never had a hitch with it and it goes to keeping my life paperless.
The messaging bit serves as a full SMS inbox, outbox & drafts affair. With POP3 email access and the full keyboard it serves well with a massive amount of storage.
The web browser combined with the zoom feature is very handy but is let down by (not having Wi-Fi) the GPRS connection. Its never as fast as the networks promise and can be very expensive when roaming. Ok the use when you really have to but is cut down version of Opera and doesnât allow for plug ins for Flash graphics. It does however work well with Java.
The contacts section is absolutely superb. With completely customisable contact cards and massive storage space. The interaction between Email, telephony, fax makes it a pleasure to use. The ability to back-up to Outlook via Bluetooth removes the worry of losing your details in the event of misplacing the phone. Combined with add-on software (PowerProfiles) I can use the phone to allow only family calls after 6pm and only VIP calls after bedtime. Therefore removing the hassle of worrying about sales calls from china at 4am.
The documents button launches a fully fledged word processor. With the ability to convert to MS Word format it almost makes you think of the 9300 as a tiny laptop. Spreadsheet and micro-presentation software is available via the Desktop.
The calendar works well and also backs up to Outlook giving a superb interaction and usability. Meaning when Iâm in front of the PC donât have to switch back and forth for the calendar.
The built-in MP3 player is a little basic but many more are available for download on the web. Combined with the regular Nokia stereo hands-free removes the need for separate mp3 player.
The MMC slot on the back will handle up to a 2gb card. This combined with a £3 MMC USB gadget means that Iâve always got a 2gb floppy-disk with me. It has come in very handy on many occasions. And means I have a ton of space for my MP3s and E-Books.
The open Symbian S80 platform allows for complete expansion of useful software and goodies. For example I have a full screen back lit clock for my bed-side. Meaning I have a nightlight and of course bed-side alarm. Also full French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and concise English, language & medical dictionaries and thesaurus with me everywhere I go.
It is possible to rip a DVD to H234 format and watch it but it severely let down the sound quality restrictions of the MP3 & AAC codecâs. But I do keep a few episodes of Family Guy on there for long journeys. TheWas this review helpful? Yes - Nogood but a bit slow

I've used the Nokia 9300i since March 2006. I have 700 contacts on it, synced to Outlook. I use it for voice calls, SMS, email and basic web browing.
Basic voice usage is ok. The phone is a classic handset size. Works well with my Nokia Bluetooth headset. Speakerphone function is also ok, which I sometimes use while driving without a headset.
Working with 700 contacts is ok. You do have a lag whenever the phone is first booted - I think this is the contacts database indexing itself. Sync with the latest PC Suite is much faster. I'm now willing to have it sync whenever I dock the phone. A dock is included in the box.
The phone's Series 80 OS does not define a 'preferred number'. This means that if you select a contact with multiple numbers, you must then select which number you want to call. Series 40 and 60 had a 'primary number' feature which saved time for me. Series 80 also has much fewer 3rd party apps than Series 60. Nokia's new E-series uses Series 60 OS.
SMS is great with the keyboard, although the keys are smaller than the Nokia 9500's, and they are not backlit. However, predictive SMS (T9) with the numeric keypad is slow. The phone just donesn't keep up with my key presses.
Email over GRPS/EDGE is also ok, but the same messaging app handles email and SMS. The app does not multitask. That means no reading or writing SMS while the app is downloading email. This is a time-waster.
Receiving and reading PDF's is something I do a lot. The phone's magnizy and reduce keyboard shortcuts are great in this regard. The 640 pixels wide screen also helps.
The web browser handles basic web sites only. I use IHT.com. Fancier sites like CNN.com don't work too well. Web browser works far better over a WiFi connection than over GPRS/EDGE, suspect processor overload.
The 9300i has WiFi and T9 and the 9300 does not. WiFi works ok. However, there's no keyboard shortcut to turn it on and off, while there are shortcuts for turning Bluetooth and IrDA on and off.
Battery life is decent, although after 10 months of daily use, it does not last as long anymore.
Durability is above average. Nokia seems to have used a better grade of plastic since it scratches less than my earlier units. I've dropped the unit several times and bent the hindle. The phone just keeps on working.
Compared to the Nokia 9500, I didn't miss the camera a bit. I liked the much smaller and lighter. It does not attract attention as it looks like a 4 yr old Nokia 6210, until you open it up.Was this review helpful? Yes - No
