I suppose some people don't like this album, but I personally think it is an extremely good one. After Pearl Jam totally changed their sound with Vitalogy, they went even more different with No Code. This album has alot of songs that arent necessarily real rock and roll songs, but merely songs that may not pack a punch, but are of a very hiiigh quality, songs like Off He Goes, In My Tree, and Present Tense. Although I'd have to say my favorite song on this cd is Red Mosquito, this is one of the songs on the album that is more rock, but in a non conventional way, overall it's just a great cd and a great departure from the ordinary.
I COULDNT IMAGINE WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING TO COME AFTER THIS RELEASE...
THESE ARE MY FAVOURITES:
1. VS.
2. TEN
3. NO CODE
4. VITALOGY
5. YIELD
6. BINAURAL
7. RIOT ACT
Most Pearl Jam fans think that this album is a disgrace, but I on the other hand have to disagree. "Ten","Vs", and "Vitalogy" are all very good records, and although No Code may show that the band has matured, the quality of their music hasn't changed. Songs like "In My Tree" and "Smile" just shows how creative this album is. Overall this is one of the most mellow records Pearl Jam ever released, but don't let that bother you. No Code is simply an example of how good Pearl Jam is. Ten, Vs, and Vitalogy was a fine example of their more heavy side, and No Code is a fine example of their more mellow material.
definitely a different direction for pearl jam but still a great album a must have.
I have this Cd and it is really good . Every song on here is so nicely crafted . What is wrong with you ? If you love or enjoy Limp Biz
I read many reviews before buying No Code. They were mixed, some trying to destroy PJ. I was surprised. Either way I brought it. I had the feeling the cardboard CD cases will stay, I was also hoping that it'll fit in my CD tower/case (Vitalogy was to big to fit). I poped the CD in, and listened to it whole. WOW! Yes, the sound was different, but it was still PJ. Yes, it never topped the charts, but who cares...it's the sound, lyrics, and effort. I liked the album. I love more of PJ's harder sounds like in their previous albums, but it's still great.
Pearl Jam was such a good band before this album. Other than "Hail, Hail" I hated every song on this
This is a unique record with a wider sound than most other bands I have heard. No songs sound similar on this album, they almost don't fit, and that is what makes the album so good.
"no code" truly is a diamond compared to empty albums released by other bands of then and now. three words- DEPTH IN SONGWRITING! vedder shines britely as ever on this album. dylan who? these clever lyrics will have you striving for years to capture their full capacity. besides the song writing, every song on this cd is great overall. traces of any type of music can be found in these songs. CHECK IT OUT!!!
It's not easy to get into this album at the beginning, but once you got to,well, you can't help fallin'crazily in love with it...Lyrycs are just sweet lines of poetry(yes, even Lukin),put the cd on and you will feel your heart beat for the very first time...of course, not everyone may appreciate it,it's Pearl Jam gettin' mature,it's not for kids who like only playin'
Sorry for my English...
it took a little while to get into it but now that i am it one of my favorite albums. it alot slower than other albums but that doesnt matter, cos i really appreciate the lyrics and meanings of each song. i a person who has to know what the song is about. i hate ppl who pose and pretend to like stuff when they dont know what they are singing about. overall a great original sounding album, way too under- rated.
I can truely understand why this is an unapreciated work. However music is not just heavy noises and this album confirms what it was already clear in the PJ´s previous ones: Vedder and company are the most creative musicians in nowadays rock world. No Code combines slow and beautiful songs like the unforgettable "Who You Are" with hard ones like the perfection of "Hail Hail". Check also "Sometimes", "Smile", "Red Mosquito" or "Around the Bend"
Definitely their least commercial album to date, but a great album in iteself. One of their most mellow on the whole, and may take a few listens to get into it, but after that you will slowly fall in love.
this maybe doesn't have the hits the previous 3 albums did, but this album shows the real talents of the band. Tracks like who are you, around the bend and sometimes proove that pearl jam is one of the most talented bands off all time. They don't write songs to become hits, they write them to go with the album and they challenge themselves to the fullest. All in all this showed what the band is capable of
Let's just take a few years back and review. Kurt is dead, everyone is really sad, Pearl Jam just lost a big fight with ticket master, and, most importantly, this guys are growing old.
Yeap! A sure sign of aging this album is. No more angst and rage, no more jumping up and down the stage like a performing monkey. This is Pearl Jam at their maturest. Some don't like it, I can understand that. Some, like me, embrace the change, knowing that these people are human too and to move on and out of their past. This album is a good transient from past to present and any Pearl Jam fan would love this album. Memorable tracks - Hail, hail, off he goes, habit, red mosquito,
This CD's a little sullen, but kind of grows on you.
This is really the less good PJ album. Altough most of the tracks are good when you take them one by one, the whole album really lack in direction.
You got one progressive song, one folk song, one indian song, one country song, one grunge song, one punk song,...
what's the point? In the end, this album is a kinda big musical stew that doesn't really work. But most of all, the songs on No Code are simply not their best. In fact, Only Present Tense is really, really good. I would have put 3 stars, but No code is really disappointing for a PJ album.
No Code is a lot more mellow than other PJ stuff so PJ rock fans will find them-selves playing Hail Hail, Habit, and Lukin over and over again. But the tunes like Sometimes, Off He Goes, and Present Tense are some of my favorites by PJ, despite their less than rockin' flavor.
I'd give it a 5 except it would be a bit misleading.
even though this is their least album to date, it is still an amazing piece of work. Melody, meaning, and pure soul are more important than power chords and blistering guitars, which is probably why so many idiots dont like it, but pj is one of the smartest rock bands ever--they knew what they were doing, exactly the opposite of what most people wanted. only a few unmemorable tracks keep it from being perfect, but it is still a tremendous achievement
ten was cool
vs. its best
this one sucks!!!
Definitely a great album. It has a unique sound that can be overwhelming at first, but after a couple of listens it pure gold. Pure PJ
I remember going to see PJ for the no code tour in Hartford...
one of my college roomates told me the album sucked...
I on the other hand feel that it was a great album... not as easily digestable as a pop song, but refined..
Definitely Neil Youngesque in many songs...
Powerful.. true to emotion
I GOT THIS CD HOPING FOR A CD THAT WOULD TOP TEN AND THIS ONE DEFFINETLY WASNT IT, THIS ALBUM IS THE WORST ALBUM IVE EVER HEARD. THIS WAS THE BIGGEST DISAPOINTMENT OF THAT YEAR. IN THIS CD PEARL JAM SUCKED!!!
hell, i'm not sure even cesear felt as good about himself as much as PJ has lately. they evidently didn't mind marketing about a million live albums they did on their last tour, shamelessly and without objective....oh wait, they did have an objective--they wanted to make money again after the long absence of that after Ten
No Code, the "uncodifiable" fourth album released by Pearl Jam, maintains that the band can swim upstream, change directions, and still continue to make definitive waves among die-hard PJ fans and rock fans alike. While I enjoyed this album, as a whole, better than I did Vitalogy, it lacked having songs that could equal the few select classics of their third opus and initially paled in comparison to the immortals VS. and Ten. However, in the end the album grows on one like a wart. Also, much is to be said about tunes like Off He Goes, Red Mosquito, and Present Tense, which remain some of my favorites from the Pearl Jam catalog. In conclusion, this album lacks the magnificence of most of the ones before and after it. For music fans willing to make No Code a purchase, lend an ear to the songs above and also try out the concert rave-up Hail, Hail, the harmonica-based Smile, the percussionists' favorite In My Tree, and punkish rockers Habit and Lukin.
NO CODE IS PEARL JAM'S TRUE MASTERPIECE. IT SHOWS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT/SOPHISTICATED TYPE OF PEARL JAM. IT IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PEARL JAM CD. ANY PEARL JAM FANS OUT THERE THAT DON'T HAVE 'NO CODE', BUT IT NOW! IT'S GREAT!
smile, red mosquito, present tense suck? You gotta be crazy or smthn...
