Nintendo first mentioned a successor to the Nintendo 64 on March 3, 1999, a day after Sony's announcement of the PlayStation 2. Two months later, on May 12, 1999, Nintendo of America's chairman Howard Lincoln officially announced the console, which would be codenamed "Dolphin."

In classic form, Nintendo remained quiet for over a year about "Dolphin," preferring to focus on the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color at E3 2000. It wasn't until August 24, 2000, a day before Spaceworld 2000, that the company officially unveiled the GameCube, the end result of the "Dolphin" project.

The heart of the GameCube is a 405MHz, 0.18-micron, IBM-produced CPU called the "Gekko." The Gekko is based on the PowerPC architecture but optimized for game playing. The system's 202.5 Mhz video processor, called "Flipper," was designed by ArtX and is being produced by NEC. ArtX is headed by Dr. Wei Yen, who played a major role in the development of the Nintendo 64's graphics chip.

For its storage medium, the GameCube uses 8-cm discs based on DVD technology that can hold up to 1.5GB. Since they are smaller than traditional DVDs, the GameCube will not be able to play DVD movies. However, Matsushita is developing a DVD player that will also be able to play GameCube software.

The GameCube's controller combines elements from just about every controller before it, as well as introducing a few innovations of its own. In addition to the standard analog stick, D-pad and shoulder buttons, Nintendo has added an analog camera stick, moved the Z-button to the right shoulder and rearranged the button configuration so that there is a large A button surrounded by the X, Y and B buttons. Like the N64, the GameCube features four controller ports.

The regular GameCube memory card holds 4 Megabits of data, but the ~Digicard Adapter will allow for flash memory cards that can hold 64MB to 128MB, effectively giving the console the functionality of the failed 64DD add-on for the N64. A choice between a 56K modem and broadband adapter will be available for online connectivity, but neither of these add-ons is included with the console.

Unlike the N64 and Game Boy Color, which connect using an adapter, the GameCube will interface directly with the Game Boy Advance to transmit information back and forth. The portable system can also be used as an advanced GameCube controller. ~ Skyler Miller, All Game Guide

    GameCube, the hard facts.

First and formost, the GameCube has a 32-bit 485 Mhz MPU (RISC structure). X-Box and PS2 have a 32-bit 733 MHz Intell and a 128-bit 294 MHz, respectivily, and both have a CISC structure. Fact: RISC structured processors are faster than CISC process...ors of the same MHz. This GameCubes MPU equivilent to about 785 MHz CISC processor. Now you are probablly saying WHAT??? XBOX AND GAMECUBE ARE ONLY 32-bit and u PS2 owners are laughing at the XBOX and GAMECUBE owners, hold on to your seats, because here comes the GFLOPS. GFLOPS tell about how many pixels one can display. PS2 owners: you have 6.2 million, XBOX owners you have: an unfigured ammount which means Microsoft has not taken the time to compute them. GameCube owners you have: 10.5 million, and to further torment PS2 owners Dreamcast has 7.2 million. Memory. Now in this catagory XBOX owners are making fun of GC owners who are making fun of th PS2 owners. Total Memory in the XBOX, GC, and PS2 are: 64 megs, 40megs, and 32megs, respectivily. Now GameCube splits its 40 megs into 2 different catagories. Its main memory consists of 24 MB MoSys 1T-SRAM. And in the GC A-Memory it has 16 MB 81 MHz DRAM. Which in turn the T1-SRAM doubles because of the speep capabilties of it which makes 48 SRAM combined with the 16 megs of DRAM makes 64 MB of SD-RAM. XBOX is just 64 MB of SD-RAM and PS2 is 28 MB SD-RAM and 4 MB of VRAM. Now according to a recent survey the easiest system to develop for was the GameCube followed by XBOX (with its computer like structure)and then PS2. Well i hope i have put some good facts in ur brains so you have something to defend the GC with. Remember, the GCs actual specs may look wussy compared to the XBOX RAW specs, but believe me, Nintendo has something up its sleeve... Read more Less

Oh I love this thing! It's small enough to fit into tight spaces, and it plays awesome games. Even though the games arent as many Gigabytes, the games are as good as PS2's and they load much faster. I'm going to get another one in a few months for mu...a. Read more Less
