Nintendo first mentioned a successor to the Nintendo 64 on March 3, 1999, a day after Sony's announcement of the PlayStation 2. Two months later, on May 12, 1999, Nintendo of America's chairman Howard Lincoln officially announced the console, which would be codenamed "Dolphin."

In classic form, Nintendo remained quiet for over a year about "Dolphin," preferring to focus on the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color at E3 2000. It wasn't until August 24, 2000, a day before Spaceworld 2000, that the company officially unveiled the GameCube, the end result of the "Dolphin" project.

The heart of the GameCube is a 405MHz, 0.18-micron, IBM-produced CPU called the "Gekko." The Gekko is based on the PowerPC architecture but optimized for game playing. The system's 202.5 Mhz video processor, called "Flipper," was designed by ArtX and is being produced by NEC. ArtX is headed by Dr. Wei Yen, who played a major role in the development of the Nintendo 64's graphics chip.

For its storage medium, the GameCube uses 8-cm discs based on DVD technology that can hold up to 1.5GB. Since they are smaller than traditional DVDs, the GameCube will not be able to play DVD movies. However, Matsushita is developing a DVD player that will also be able to play GameCube software.

The GameCube's controller combines elements from just about every controller before it, as well as introducing a few innovations of its own. In addition to the standard analog stick, D-pad and shoulder buttons, Nintendo has added an analog camera stick, moved the Z-button to the right shoulder and rearranged the button configuration so that there is a large A button surrounded by the X, Y and B buttons. Like the N64, the GameCube features four controller ports.

The regular GameCube memory card holds 4 Megabits of data, but the Digicard Adapter will allow for flash memory cards that can hold 64MB to 128MB, effectively giving the console the functionality of the failed 64DD add-on for the N64. A choice between a 56K modem and broadband adapter will be available for online connectivity, but neither of these add-ons is included with the console.

Unlike the N64 and Game Boy Color, which connect using an adapter, the GameCube will interface directly with the Game Boy Advance to transmit information back and forth. The portable system can also be used as an advanced GameCube controller. ~ Skyler Miller, All Game Guide

It doesnt get much better than this...

Pros: Almost everything, the games, the controller, the size, the price, and the best value.

Cons: The fact that it doesnt have a DVD player and that it doesnt have a lot of game for a more mature audience.

I think the Gamecube is definetly the best console of the 3 - PS2, XBOX, and GAMECUBE. Why? First, no offense but PS2's graphics are only better than N64's. Only some of their games graphics are better than Dreamcast and I havent seen a Gamec...ube game with worse graphics than a PS2. The XBOX, however, is a different story. Im sorry to say but the graphics on XBOX are better than Gamecube - but not always and if it is its not like the difference between Gamecube and PS2. The sound is perfect. All the systems have basically the same sound systems and you cant make a real difference out of them unless you have surround sound which Gamecube unfortuanlty doesnt support. Although, not many Games support this feature for any of the consoles so it does not even matter. The sound that the Gamecube produces is perfect the way it is. The controller is revolutionary. Unlike the XBOX controller where they had to make the Conroller S because so many people hated the first one (and the S still has a ways to go) and the PS2 which has the same exact frame as the PSOne (which is not good because your hand gets tired after a while on that and its not contured like the Gamecube's), the Gamecube controller fits in your hand perfectly. All the curves and crevices are in there and the moment you wrap your hands around it you will know how to use it because the buttons are placed perfectly where your fingers will land. The amount of fun this game system produces is amazing. The day I bought my Gamecube I played it until 11:00. I tried doing that with a PS2 and XBOX (when my friends got one) and after 4 hours or so my eyes started hurting and the games started getting boring and my hand was sore beacuse of the controller. I hope my review was usefull, and I am only half Nintendo fanboy, and I like XBOX and PS2, but I still have to say that if you have a choice among all 3, get the Gamecube. You wont regret it. Get This

I own a Gamecube, and i am pleased to say that i am very happy with my purchace. First of all, i would like to say that i am NOT a fanboy.(gettin a Ps2 soon...)The GCN, in my opinion would have to be one of the best consoles that i have had the pleas...ure of owning..alongside the SNES and N64 both of which were good consoles. However, since the launch of GCN, many users were wary of the fact that the N64 was a failure and were are litte *scared* should we say, to purchace a GCN. Over all i give GCN a five because it does what i want it to do. And that is play games. I didnt buy it to be an entertainment system. The graphics sound and control are supurb on this system.. The controller fits beautifully in your hand. One noteable fact is, that it is not very well equipped for fighting games, but nonetheless, is still an excellent controller. I give fun factor five, simply beacause this machine also does one other thing: Plays Nintendos AWESOME first party games. So therefore, i would recomend this console to whoever wants to PLAY GAMES and have FUN! Read more Less
