D70s is a major step up from entry level dslr

By First NameL  Nov 15, 2005 | 24 out of 30 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

    Pros: lens, picture quality, features

    Cons: expensive to me

I had a canon digital rebel which was adequate. The pictures from the canon rebel weren't any better than my a510(which is a great purse sized camera). For the 1k+ that the canon costs with accessories and tax I expected more. The Nikon D70s is a... far better camera for about $300 more in kit form. The picture quality is excellent. Shooting fast sequences is not a problem. Camera feel, fit and finish are excellent. The camera body is plastic but it doesn't feel plasticy or cheap. Downside if any is Nikons proprietary raw format requires a plugin to work in photoshop. If it's in your budget and your a photo hound you won't regret it. This one's a keeper. Read more Less

D70 a great entry level dSLR

By John  May 1, 2006 | 12 out of 12 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

Pros: Good quality camera and images

Cons: lacks a couple features of the higher end models

I love my D70. Its a great camera. I highly recommend if you dont know the proper way to balance your exposure and manually setup your camera you learn ( I took classes from a local night school). Its a fun camera but its really fun when you unde...rstand what makes it work. There is a firmware update for the D70 that will change the appearance of the menus and I believe add a feature or 2. I own 3 batteries, 5 memory sticks 512-1gig, a tripod, 2 lenses (18-70 and 70-300), filters, lens extenders and other miscellaneous tools. You can get some great deals online for these accessories. The problems I have with my d70 are: No battery grip designed by nikon. There are some 3rd party battery grips but they didnt look that great. No wired remote trigger. You can get a infrared remote but it only fires from the front of the camera. No ISO 100. Not that huge of a thing but the lower the ISO the better the quality. 200 is the lowest on the D70. None of these are major problems, just things you should be aware of. I highly recommend this camera for getting into the high quality world of SLR cameras. Read more Less

3 years later and still awsome

    By K  May 20, 2007 | 8 out of 8 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

Pros: Long battery life, quick focus, dedicated buttons for important features, easy to adjust settings

Cons: Noise at ISO 1600, infrared sensitivity

This camera is easy to learn to use. If you don't have experience with SLR cameras, you will pick it up easily through a little reading and trial-and-error. It's any easy leap for someone coming from 35mm SLR background. The features are eas...y to access and it is very easy to make adjustments to the exposure and white balance. The light meter is really accurate (more accurate than the D80/D40/or any of the Canons), it uses the same metering chip as the D200. The variety of flash sync options are really useful. For indoor shots I usually use "Slow" with flash compensation turned down to -.7 with the shutter set at 1/30 to let in as much ambient light as possible. The built-in speedlight is powerful, and its easy to add extra flashes to the system. The camera focuses quickly even in low light. I can use all of my old Nikon lenses, except for the E-series ones, which are no fun to use at all wth this camera. The D70 is built with a high quality plastic that doesn't crack or have open seams (like the digital Rebels). I've knocked the camera into many walls and it's taken it in stride. The kit lens is really nice. Both the 18-55 and the 18-70 will give you excellent pictures. The fact that it only has 6MP is not a big deal. It uses it pixels effectively and can stand up to cameras that are pixel packers. You won't notice the difference except with poster sized prints. There is more noise than the Canons at ISO 1600, although it is the kind that is easier to remove (Canon gives you multi-colored noise, Nikon gives you monochromatic noise). My only beef is that the sensor sensitivity to infrared is high. This is true of all digital cameras compared to film cameras, but is more noticable in the consumer-range DSLRs than the pros. I would recommend getting a wider shoulder strap for the camera, one that you really like. Then you will be more tempted to carry the camera everywhere. It may be a few years old now, and not have the most pixels packed into it, but if you are on a budget it is the way to go. I love this camera. You get features, build quality, and image quality compared to certain other DSLRs in this price bracket namely those whose name starts with "Digital Rebel." Read more Less

    Fantastic Camera

By matt  Dec 16, 2006 | 7 out of 7 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

Pros: Excellent value, great build quality, lots of features

Cons: relatively low resolution (compared to newer D80, Sony A100, et al)

What a great camera. There isn't much you can't do with this thing. A much better buy than the D50 because of the two command dials (try shooting in full manual mode with only one!) and the commander mode for flash (remotely control your SB ...600/800 without wires!). Even though the resolution doesn't compare to the newer D80, Sony's A100 or other 10 MP cameras at the $1000 price point, it still takes better pictures than the D100 and Rebel XT. Plus, you can now find it for around $500. Save that money and buy some better glass or an off-body flash. I've had mine for a year now and I still love it. I will probably wait until the D200s or the next prosumer Nikon comes out before I think about upgrading. I will keep the D70s as my back-up/second body (hey, it may be "obsolete", but it still takes the same quality of photographs as it did when it was brand new!). I couldn't be happier with this camera. The only thing I wish it did was automaticaly switch the white balance to "flash" when the flash is fired. Then again, I don't know of any cameras that do that. Until they do, I'll keep shooting in RAW because I almost always forget to switch WB myself. Read more Less

    Nikon D70s Digital Camera-good investment!

By The Moose  Nov 27, 2006 | 5 out of 5 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

Pros: Fast shutter, great images, not too automated.

Cons: None that come to mind...

I went from a Nikon FE to this as my first DSLR and I have to say I have been impressed with the ease of transition to this camera. I can flip it over to fully manual and it's like having my FE again. I can also mount my old manual lenses and the...y will run just like they always have on the FE body. There are alot of electronic functions, but most are logical and easy to pick up. I recommend this for anyone wanting to begin using a DSLR. Read more Less

    Amazing DSLR

By DrewP  Apr 2, 2007 | 3 out of 3 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

Pros: Super fast start-up, quick focus, beautiful pictures, long battery life, and not to heavy

Cons: A little bit confusing at first, at least to learn the more complex aspects of the camera

My father bought this camera and me and him both use it frequently. We are both very satisfied and it proved to be a great camera for all of our photography needs. The only thing is that the basic lens that it comes with is too limiting. In order t...o get the most out of this camera you have to shell out some major cash. We purchased the 18-200mm lens, which saved time that you otherwise would have had to have spent constantly changing lenses. We bought a 4GB memory card which holds somewhere around 2000 pictures. The battery lasts for days of non-stop shotting which is great for vacations in which you have no way of charging. All in all, I highly recomend someone to purchase one of Nikon's Digital SLR cameras. Read more Less

    Perfect "entry level SLR"

By IShouldKnow  Dec 7, 2006 | 3 out of 3 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

    Pros: Automatic or manual options

Cons: bulky for extended travel w/lenses and accessories

Perfect SLR for an amateur who loves taking good pics. Menu is straightforward and easy to use. Optiions are plentiful.... auto or do-it-yourself. Makes for an expensive hobby, but very rewarding.

Pros: 3 frames second, great battery, feels right

    Cons: Only 6.1MB

Avid photography. Grew up on Canons but made the switch to Nikon with this SLR. Lots to like. Feels great in the hand (not too big, not too small). You can rapid fire a lot of pics at 3 frames per second. The battery is great and much better than... my point and shoot. Big 2" LCD on the back. You can also quickly zoom in on a pic you just took to see the clarity (e.g. see if there was any camera shake). Also like the vari-program selections dial which is a quick way to tell the camera you are taking an action shot, close up, etc. The built in speed light is also handy. Buy the kit (vs. body only) it's a great way to get started. All around fun camera. Read more Less

Pros: Takes all Nikon AF lenses, well-designed, fast shutter

Cons: low rez means grainy low-light or high film speed

As a complete beginner to photography, this was my first non-point-and-shoot camera. I bought used. The controls are easy to reach and easy to learn; as a print reporter learning photojournalism, this was clutch. That I could use a hand-me-down Niko...n AF lens from an old film camera -- albeit at a slight loss of image quality -- was another great plus. The camera has so far survived shooting in light rain, getting knocked around in my bag, constant switching of lenses and other wear and tear from an inexpert user. It was used when I bought it, so I'm impressed at the camera's durability. My main complaint is image quality. As an inexpert shooter I don't always get settings perfect, and this is not a forgiving camera: shots in low light and images that must be sharpened for publication on newsprint look grainy. Great Camera for mid-level price

By Djendral  Dec 11, 2006 | 2 out of 3 found this Nikon D70s review helpful

    Pros: Comfort & Easy use

Cons: Must have complete range of lenses

I've decided to buy Nikon D70s rather to buy Canon 350D and sell my Kodak Z740 for more advance use.. Everything's great! Camera grip match perfectly with my hand.. all the control are acceptable.. Though I've found that some noise occure...d when using high ISO :) Well, I'm a newbie for SLR camera.. still learning to get the best! Read more Less
