Best SLR Digital for the money

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 6, 2004 | 100 out of 106 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: Very fast, fast start, fast focus, fast shutter

Cons: At $1300 for camera and lens... is a little expensive

I tried several digital SLRs in the local camera store and none focused as quickly as the D70. The D70 was always ready to "take the next shot"; in fact, it is ready the second you turn on the power switch. The D70 has great buffering techn...ology so it is capable of three frames per second for the first 20 frames and 2.2 frames until your card is full. I highly recommed the Sandisk Ultra II CompactFlash card if you buy this camera; at 60x write speeds it allows you to take full advantage of the camera.Search the Internet and read what the experts are saying about this one. In some ways it out performs the Canon 10 and 300 series... in some ways it out performs the Nikon 100. Read more Less

The D70 is not for the Beginner Camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 21, 2005 | 43 out of 52 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: The Camera Takes Great Pictures with excellent sharpness and it has tons of features. Ability to change lenses.

Cons: Unless all of your settings are set perfect on the camera, the photo is usually to dark or light, is out of focus, or did not focus on the right object, and or the white balance is not the right tint. HEAVY. The camera is a great price if your photos improve with the camera but it is a little pricy if you are purchasing a point and shoot camera.

The D70 is an incredible camera. However, it can be very overwhelming for an amateur photographer. Nikon thought of everything when they designed the D70. It has a very quick shutter response and has every feature you could want with the exception of... no movie mode whick can be found on most non-SLR cameras today. The camera requires a lot of fine tuning with 10 different modes and an additional autofocus mode. I was not impressed with the autofocus so I am consistantly adjusting the shutter speed and aperature. I also have to flip between my 70-300mm zoom lens and my 18-70mm zoom lens. The D70 is a lot more like a film SLR than a typical digital camera today. With the exception that you can view your photos right after you take them the D70 is a plain SLR. Their is no live view on the LCD screen so you are stuck looking through the viewfinder. One thing nice about the viewfinder though is the spot metering. Most digital cameras automaticaly focus on the closest object. I say object because the object the camera chooses to focus on is not always the subject. The D70 allows you to choose the object you want to focus on and where you want the subject to be. So you can have a person standing to the side of the picture and it will still focus on the person. Some of the features that are really nice about the camera is the automatic rotation. I take a lot of photos sideways and Nikon programed the camera so that it automatically rotates the photo to the right or left. I know some people who bought the D70 just because they wanted more zoom and megapixels. That is not a good reason! The D70 as I said before is a professional camera and should be considered if you would like to have more control over your pictures such as having the ability to change your shutter speed or white balance. This camera is also quite heavy. It is not the type of camera that you can leave in your pocket. It is the kind of camera where you sit down and take the lens and camera out of the bag and screw the lens on. I also recomend putting on a UV lens filter to protect the lens. If you are ready for a camera like this, it is an incredible camera. It takes awhile to get used to but it is a great camera for the price. One thing I noticed though is to not expect to pay $1,200 and be done. Expect to buy another lens besides the 18-70mm and need to buy a bigger compact flash card, possibly a Nikon Speedlight(to take pictures with flash at higher shutter speeds), a camera case, and possibly the optional infrared remote control. Other filters to change the amount of light and color also are fun once you get the basic accessories as well. The biggest change you will notice when you buy the D70 is the shutter response though. I have had a Sony DSC-F707 for the past 4 years and it is really hard to switch back and forth with my Nikon because it takes so much longer to take the picture on the Sony. (The Sony is much lighter though and you don't need to switch lens and adjust everything!) The Nikon D70 has an excellent picture quality. When shopping for lenses, make sure you either buy a Nikkor or a Sigma lens. It is ok to buy used lens but some lenses like Quantray are just junk. Also, make sure the lenses are Nikon compatible. Cannon lenses do not work on Nikon. If you buy this camera just be patient and eventually you will get the hang of it. Good luck! Read more Less

    Poor Review(ers)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 5, 2005 | 27 out of 27 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: Great camera, features, quality, handling

    Cons: none yet

I've been an amateur and at times a pro for almost 40 years. had my own darkroom when I was a teenager, including color developing without machines (a real challenge). My prints are still in great shape after three decades! Folks here are blamin...g the D70 for not being able to get good sunset pictures! Sheesh, digital cameras of any make do not have near the contrast range of film, even film does not really have enough contrast range to handle the dark foreground and the bright sky of a sunset picture. Special photographic techniques can help (graudated filters, sandwiching two photos at different exposures, etc.) Don't blame the camera, do some learning! I've had the D70 for a year and have taken thousands of photos with it and I've been very pleased, any failings and they have been very few were my own. The versatility of this SLR in digital format is great along with the great Nikon lenses available (admittedly, if you have deep pockets!). The speed of operation, focus, warm-up (what warm-up?!), great battery life are equal to anything I have need for. My coolpix 5700 became instantly unbearably slow compared to the D70, but of course being used to years of film SLR's the 5700 was always slow as molasses in fine detail modes. Since I love landscape photography, my wishlist would be for greater detail, more megs!, but I am talking 16 x 20 prints of minute detail and for that even a film photographer usually needs a medium format camera. It would be great if the D70 could be upgraded, but in reality don't see that being possible and the Nikon lenses are the great, expensive and lasting investment, the camera body is something to replace every few years as needed. Now having said all that, the D70 has more than enough detail for great 8 x 10's for the serious amateur and in many situations for many pros. I am very pleased with the D70 and just hope it keeps functioning perfectly until the time comes to retire it for a newer Nikon!! Read more Less

    Not for the weekend warrior...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 29, 2004 | 22 out of 23 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: Beautiful pictures, tons of features to get the best picture.

Cons: Not idiot proof... Amateurs new to photography will not shoot good images.

I read a few articles on this camera before I decided that the people who knew little or nothing about photography were the ones that ranked the camera poorly. To put it bluntly if you don't know what your doing with your SLR, you're going to... drown in the features of this camera. The camera is easy to use if you know what you are doing. The people that open the box and think they are going to be taking masterpieces are wrong; you have to know how to use the tool. I could spend thousands of dollars on golf clubs but only play moderately better than my cheap ones, why, because I don't spend the time to make the tool work to its capacity. The same is with photography. If you don't have experience with a variety of film speeds, exposure times and aperture settings, you're not going to enjoy this camera. Save the money buy a point and shoot camera that has the lens built in, it will be cheaper and do everything for you so chances are if your an inexperienced photographer you will potentially take better pictures because you won't get lost in the features you know nothing about. If you buy the outfit kit, spend the money and buy a GOOD 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Especially if you take pictures outdoors or in low light. And my advice to those new at digital, play a lot with all of different settings to find what works, it doesn't cost anything, know what your camera can and can't do before you use it to take irreplaceable images. ~Cheers Read more Less

Pros: Outstanding pix, many options, well balanced,on & on & on.........

Cons: many options lol requires a lot of reading if your not familiar with SLR digital cameras

I own a Nikon Coolpix and love it. Then I purchased the D70, it was like going from a go-kart to a Formula I racer. Increadible! In shooting sport shots of my kids, this camera exceeded all my expecations of its capabilities. Made me look like a Spor...ts Illistrated photographer and I'd never used an SLR digital camera before. I highly recomend the D70 even in my limited use. Read more Less

I enjoy it more each day

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 16, 2004 | 14 out of 16 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

    Pros: Speed, Image, Endless Possibilities

Cons: This is not a toy, You will need to know how to Operate a SLR.

Out of the box the D70 was ready to go and we snapped several pictures before we even got the thing home. The first thing we noticed was that most of the pictures were blurred or too dark. But, Several of the pictures revealed far superior quality ...than any camera I have ever used, and all we needed to do was learn a little about cameras and how they work to correct these minor image problems. I have devoted myself to Learning photography with this Camera, and Since I don't need to use film I have complete freedom with my shots. My photography skills have improved every single day. This camera really is the best of both worlds, the creative possibilities of 35 mm film, tied with the convenience and ease of use of a digital camera. I am taking some stunning photographs like never before. Read more Less

    Nikon D70 Outfit

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 25, 2004 | 12 out of 12 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: Instant on, picture quality, controls, auto focus, versatility of the kit lens, battery life

Cons: I wish it weighed less

I bought this camera in June 2004 and have taken well over 1000 pictures since. I considered several high end, non-SLR cameras before making this purchase but found I was unwilling to give up the versatility and picture taking performance I had becom...e used to with my Nikon N50 film SLR. It was also nice that I could use a 70-300mm zoom lens I already owned. I find the pictures I can take with this camera are only limited by my still developing skills as a photographer. Battery life has been impressive with 400 or more pictures on a single charge. The camera focuses quickly in almost any lighting condition. The relatively low noise even at ISO 1600 has allowed me to shoot impressive pictures at night or when I don't want to use flash. The only negative is that the built-in beep that is supposed to sound under certain conditions doesn't work. I guess I'll have to give up the camera long enough to have it repaired under warranty. NIKON D70

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 27, 2004 | 12 out of 15 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

    Pros: great camera, great pictures.

Cons: price... however it is better than paying for the D100

This is an awesome camera. really not hard to use at all if you understand the basic principles of an SLR. Picture quality is there if you know how to use it... these other people that are writing that it has bad picture quality simply dont know how ...to operate the camera properly. I suggest learning how to take a picture with the camera before making yourself look stupid by writing a review based on your poor technique. Read more Less

Good, but manual control makes it better

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 16, 2004 | 11 out of 13 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: Build quality, resolution, compatibility with my lens kit, manual-use ability

Cons: manufacturer warranty & manual settings required for optimum results (if that is a problem)

I bought this camera while on holiday in the USA - and as Nikon do not have an international warranty, is a bit fraught - real issue with this localised warranty thing and almost convinced me to by another brand - it appears that if you cmera fails w...hile you are overseas, then tough luck on getting it repaired. This is why I gave it a low support rating. Good resolution once you get the settings right, best to manage the metering manually in high contrast situations as the metering seems to get fooled into over-exposing a stop or so, usual auto-focus glories and woes (so typically used manually). Colour a little odd until I fooled with the settings to make things a bit warmer - and easy to fiddle in photoshop or similar. Tip: buy the fastest & biggest compact flash card you can afford as at 10Mb, RAW files chew up a lot of space in a hurry - but don't they look good when you blow 'em up.Overall, a good, very well built camera - metal lens mount, metal chassis (I think). Very good entry level prosumer camera that rewards manual control and matches existing lens kits well - and if you wanted a point-and-shoot's simplicty with auto everything, why on earth did you spend all that cash to buy an SLR in the first place? Pros: if you currently own a NIKON SLR camera and thinking of going digital...LOOK NO MORE!

Cons: you got a lot of reading...if you're not familiar with a SLR film camera

OVERALL: it's a 4 star!!! NOTHING is excellent.QUALITY: nikon makes an excellent quality cameras! i bought a NIKON D70 because i own a NIKON N70 SLR film camera and i want to do both film and digital format. having to own a nikon, i am not going ...to any other brand when it comes to SLR cameras.FEATURES: there's a lot! i'm still figuring out the features. you got a lot of reading if you're not familiar with a SLR film camera.SUPPORT: i haven't called yet. i'm sure they're average as most support departments are everywhere.VALUE: since it's still new in the market, prices do vary. just make sure that you check the website for the exact content of the package. if you see a price that's lower than others, it's guaranteed that they're selling a piece that's not supposed to be sold separately, ie. battery, software, etc. if it (price) looks good, it's not usually true!
