Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens Digital Camera

    By __A_YAHOO_USER__  Dec 22, 2005 | 40 out of 43 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

Pros: Great camera for the money

Cons: Shoots slower than the D70s and uses SD memory

Takes great photo's. Good camera for someone new to using SLR type cameras. More advanced user's may want to consider the D70s or even the D200 if you have the money.

    Best dSLR for the money

By Tomasz  Jan 6, 2006 | 37 out of 38 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

    Pros: Low cost entry dSLR

Cons: Nikon support could be improved

Nikon D50 is possibly the greatest thing to happen to digital photography since digital came to happen upon photography itself. Finally there is a good, fast and quality built digital SLR that wan't have you looking for credit. Packed with the sa...me sensor and processing power found in more expensive D70 and D70s, simples to use, lighter... what else do you need in dSLR ? You can check samples taken with different cameras here . Read more Less

Pros: Speed, Image quality, Diversity of features, Lens support, etc etc.

Cons: Uhm... there isn't enough time in the day to use this. :)

I bought the Camera from Newegg, and was VERY pleased. I picked up two 2gb SD cards, (YES THEY WORK!) the 60x speed ones, and they are quick! I fit about 700 pics per card on high quality, large size. I don't use the raw format. If you do, yo...u may want to consider a 4gb card. I'm not going to say that this camera is the qucikest, or the best, but if you compare it to what else is on the market near this price, it is the best. I considered the Canon, but shrugged that off. 6 megapixels makes an awfully good 13x19 print (maximum of my epson printer), why woud I go to the canon if the prints are so pretty, and I get more features? Don't get caught up in the megapixel war. There is ALWAYS someone with more megapixels. What few people know is that the amount of image noise you get accually INCREASES when the megapixels rise above a certain point. This is because in order to get a higher megapixel camera they have to shrink the size of the pixels on the sensor, and when they get too small for the amount of available light, you start getting noise. A lot of the point and shoot high MP cameras have this problem in low to medium light. The D50 doesn't! So the camera body is made of plastic. Who cares? It's durable enough, and if you drop your camera odds are, it's going lens first downward, so you better have a UV filter on it. Besides how many people do you know are going to drop a camera this expensive? Wear the neck strap, or get a hand strap! Is not looking like a tourist worth $500 for a new body? Besides if you drop a camera not made out of plastic things will break as well, Just maybe not the casing. What about the screen? What about the Dials? I've broken more cameras than most people have owned, and oddly, the plastic ones are the ones that have survived more falls. The plastic tends to bounce better I guess. I get around 200-400 shots per battery, but I focus a lot and use the fill flash occaisionally. Just pick up a spare battery for heavy shooting. One more word of advice, be careful with the camera places that have extremely low prices, they may try to force you to purchase a battery insisting that it doesn't come with one, and they'll try to sell it to you for twice retail price, along with any other overpriced accessories they can shove in your cart. It's an expensive purchase, don't try and scimp on it, and end up regretting it. Buy from a company you trust, and has good reviews. Read more Less

Not just an entry level SLR

By ian  Feb 19, 2006 | 17 out of 18 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

Pros: Even enhanced than the D70s

Cons: a little bit slower framerate at 2.5 fps

The Nikon D50 is an entry level SLR in the market but performs as good as other prosumer SLR's out there. It even has an improved motion tracking system than the d70s.It also uses the same sensor as the D70s (actually i've heard that the d50 s...ensor is less susceptible to noise then the d70s.You dont need a 1/8000 sec shutter speed unless you are photographing something like a nuclear explosion.THe d50's 1/4000 shutter is fast enough that you'll rarely be using it at all. The d50 is a great camera not for its price but for its performance. I dont find it a problem that it uses SD cards. SD cards are cheap nowadays and fast also.THe d50 produces great pictures that you wont even notice the difference compared to other SLR's.Good exposures, good colors and good manual controls all in all.It has a robust built also and it doesnt feel "cheap" in your hands. You can use it as a weapon. =)It comes also with a good 18-55mm kit lens that performs very well also... Read more Less

Pros: great overall product for the novice.

Cons: not for the photo geek,

I used a SLR before but needed a new one. i decided to go digital and for the money and ease of use i chose the D50.If you take your time to go through all of the features. it's a great entry level D-SLR. If your an avaid shutter bug then save an...d but the new D80 or the D200.But if you want to shoot and go, but have the option to use different lens then this is the way to go.I bought mine and took to the D.R and on a cruise. the pic were great. but as i said you have to take the time to play with to kow how the settings work.It uses the same lens that the higher price D series uses just only at 6.1 meg instead of 8 or 10 meg pic. If your ready to move into digital SLR's and love to use different lens, then this is your camara. Read more Less

    Best camera for the price

By GB Packer Fan  Nov 14, 2006 | 3 out of 3 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

Pros: Quality of pictures, Ease of Use, Many options (lenses)

    Cons: None that I've noticed

I've had this camera for 9 months and absolutely love it! Even my wife is taking more pictures than she ever did. The quality of the pictures is wonderful. There are many options for different lenses, which beats the heck out of the compacts. If ...you can afford it, get it!!! You won't think twice about it. Read more Less

    Amazing Camera

By gmnguyen  Nov 8, 2006 | 3 out of 3 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

Pros: Excellent picture quality, easy of use, good features

Cons: No wireless flash control, no RGB histogram

This is an amazing camera. I have used both D70s and D50 in wedding photography. The D50 is as good as D70. I don't see any big advantages of the D70 18-70mm over the D50 18-55mm lense. The 18-70mm is nice and quiet. That's all. Although D70 ...has a built-in flash wireless controller, you still have to buy a SB800 and place it off the camera for good portrait lighting and SB800 provides greater control capabilities on the remote flashes than D70. I think users can save money by going with the D50 and still don't miss anything. I prefer D50 over D70 but the new D80 is going to be a killer. Read more Less

    Great entry

By Jonathan  May 2, 2006 | 3 out of 4 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

    Pros: Awesome all around functionality

Cons: Interface hard to navigate quickly

I switched from film SLRs to digital SLRs with this camera. I love Nikon and think this camera is the bomb. The menus are a somewhat difficult to navigate quickly but work well. I might upgrade to the D200's larger images when the prices come dow...n but will keep this camera for many years. All around, this camera is wonderful - there is no selection of lenses like Nikon and all of the "old" lenses are fully compatable. Read more Less

    Amazing Price/Performance

By Carey  Dec 4, 2006 | 2 out of 2 found this Nikon D50 with 18-55mm Lens review helpful

Pros: Great out-of-camera JPEG quality, good set of features, very good value

    Cons: No DOF preview

I have almost made it to the magical 10,000-photos-taken point with this camera, and I don't think I could ask for much more from a camera body. It would be nice if there was a depth-of-field preview, but I can live without it. My money is much b...etter spend on better lenses, anyway. In the right hands and with the right lens, this camera can produce amazing pictures. What more is there to ask for? Read more Less
