Designed for a broad range of customers, from novices to serious and experienced photo enthusiasts, the D70 allows photographers to easily adopt digital technology into their existing camera system, or to begin building a system that will bring ongoing enjoyment in the future.

The D70 employs the popular Nikon DX Format sensor and Nikon F lens mount design. This maintains seamless compatibility with all AF Nikkor lenses while allowing photographers to take full advantage of high quality DX Nikkor lenses designed exclusively for Nikon's D-series digital SLR cameras and optimized to achieve outstanding center-to-edge-to-corner image quality.

The D70 is ready to use the instant it is turned on. The 5-area autofocus system is fast and precise, and includes an AF-assist illuminator to help maximize performance even in dark shooting conditions.

Controls are located for easy access and smooth operation. Menus are presented clearly and in plain language on the large LCD monitor. All the camera's systems have been optimized to deliver quick response. And, innovative shooting options have been added to simplify the photographic process, whether controlled manually or via advanced automatic operation.

Shutter speeds of 30 to 1/8,000 sec. ensure full creative control. The built-in auto pop-up flash can synchronize at shutter speeds of up to 1/500 sec. for great fill flash effects. Sensitivity can be set between ISO 200 to 1600 or controlled automatically across the same range of settings to maximize available light.

A 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor featuring wider dynamic range and a higher signal to noise ratio produces 3,008 x 2,000-pixel images with high resolution and superbly sharp details suited for making large prints, or for cropping for creative detail.

The D70's advanced System LSI processor is programmed for next generation performance to produce the finest in vivid colors and clarity, while maximizing the speed of file compression, memory buffer handling, simultaneous recording of JPEG and NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) files, and near-instant LCD image display.

Nikon's acclaimed 3D Color Matrix Meter with 1,005-pixel sensor assures accurate auto TTL white balance. Six different manual white balance modes, preset white balance, and white balance bracketing are also available for full creative control. Exposure compensation and flash exposure compensation combine with auto exposure bracketing to further aid in achieving the perfect shot.

Diverse playback options, versatile custom settings, a USB interface for easy connectivity or direct printing to any PictBridge compatible printer, and a bevy of other features packed into the lightest and most compact Nikon digital SLR camera to date make the D70 the best performing camera in its class.

The Nikon D70 beautifully combines the best of digital technology with quick and efficient camera handling. Add to this the advantages of Nikon's Total Imaging System, from high-quality AF, AF-S and DX Nikkor lenses and advanced Speedlight technologies to powerful software that will empower and inspire the shutterbug in everyone, and you are sure to enjoy Nikon digital SLR photography and superb pictures that are vivid and accurate in color, and crisp and clean in detail.

Best SLR Digital for the money

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 6, 2004 | 100 out of 106 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: Very fast, fast start, fast focus, fast shutter

Cons: At $1300 for camera and lens... is a little expensive

I tried several digital SLRs in the local camera store and none focused as quickly as the D70. The D70 was always ready to "take the next shot"; in fact, it is ready the second you turn on the power switch. The D70 has great buffering techn...ology so it is capable of three frames per second for the first 20 frames and 2.2 frames until your card is full. I highly recommed the Sandisk Ultra II CompactFlash card if you buy this camera; at 60x write speeds it allows you to take full advantage of the camera.Search the Internet and read what the experts are saying about this one. In some ways it out performs the Canon 10 and 300 series... in some ways it out performs the Nikon 100. Read more Less

The D70 is not for the Beginner Camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 21, 2005 | 43 out of 52 found this Nikon D70 Outfit review helpful

Pros: The Camera Takes Great Pictures with excellent sharpness and it has tons of features. Ability to change lenses.

Cons: Unless all of your settings are set perfect on the camera, the photo is usually to dark or light, is out of focus, or did not focus on the right object, and or the white balance is not the right tint. HEAVY. The camera is a great price if your photos improve with the camera but it is a little pricy if you are purchasing a point and shoot camera.

The D70 is an incredible camera. However, it can be very overwhelming for an amateur photographer. Nikon thought of everything when they designed the D70. It has a very quick shutter response and has every feature you could want with the exception of... no movie mode whick can be found on most non-SLR cameras today. The camera requires a lot of fine tuning with 10 different modes and an additional autofocus mode. I was not impressed with the autofocus so I am consistantly adjusting the shutter speed and aperature. I also have to flip between my 70-300mm zoom lens and my 18-70mm zoom lens. The D70 is a lot more like a film SLR than a typical digital camera today. With the exception that you can view your photos right after you take them the D70 is a plain SLR. Their is no live view on the LCD screen so you are stuck looking through the viewfinder. One thing nice about the viewfinder though is the spot metering. Most digital cameras automaticaly focus on the closest object. I say object because the object the camera chooses to focus on is not always the subject. The D70 allows you to choose the object you want to focus on and where you want the subject to be. So you can have a person standing to the side of the picture and it will still focus on the person. Some of the features that are really nice about the camera is the automatic rotation. I take a lot of photos sideways and Nikon programed the camera so that it automatically rotates the photo to the right or left. I know some people who bought the D70 just because they wanted more zoom and megapixels. That is not a good reason! The D70 as I said before is a professional camera and should be considered if you would like to have more control over your pictures such as having the ability to change your shutter speed or white balance. This camera is also quite heavy. It is not the type of camera that you can leave in your pocket. It is the kind of camera where you sit down and take the lens and camera out of the bag and screw the lens on. I also recomend putting on a UV lens filter to protect the lens. If you are ready for a camera like this, it is an incredible camera. It takes awhile to get used to but it is a great camera for the price. One thing I noticed though is to not expect to pay $1,200 and be done. Expect to buy another lens besides the 18-70mm and need to buy a bigger compact flash card, possibly a Nikon Speedlight(to take pictures with flash at higher shutter speeds), a camera case, and possibly the optional infrared remote control. Other filters to change the amount of light and color also are fun once you get the basic accessories as well. The biggest change you will notice when you buy the D70 is the shutter response though. I have had a Sony DSC-F707 for the past 4 years and it is really hard to switch back and forth with my Nikon because it takes so much longer to take the picture on the Sony. (The Sony is much lighter though and you don't need to switch lens and adjust everything!) The Nikon D70 has an excellent picture quality. When shopping for lenses, make sure you either buy a Nikkor or a Sigma lens. It is ok to buy used lens but some lenses like Quantray are just junk. Also, make sure the lenses are Nikon compatible. Cannon lenses do not work on Nikon. If you buy this camera just be patient and eventually you will get the hang of it. Good luck! Read more Less

    Nikon D70

The D70 is Nikon's first digital SLR for the advanced hobbyist.Professional photographers have been buying Nikon's digital single-lens reflex cameras for several years, but at $1000 (body only), the 6.1-megapixel D70 is the company's first SLR that's affordable for the advanced consumer. If you own a recent nondigital Nikon, your existing lenses should work with the D70. Beginners might prefer the $1300 D70 Outfit, which comes with a 27mm-to-105mm lens. Read more
