The Nikon D3: Built Like A Nikon

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 11, 2008 | 7 out of 8 found this Nikon D3 review helpful

Pros: Full frame, compatible with all Nikkor lenses, 9 fps/11 fps using DX mode, CMOS sensor, solid feel, great layout

Cons: Mega pixels drop when using the DX crop

Nikon has finally released its first full frame DSLR, packed with tons of features, the fastest fps on the market, and of course the new 12 mega pixel CMOS sensor. When I first picked up the Nikon D3, I was astounded by how strong it is. Like all Ni...kon DSLR and SLR cameras, the D3 does not skip on the quality. To put it simply, it is built like a Nikon. The layout, too, is very well placed and everything is in reach. If you have used Nikon previously, you'll have no problems using the D3. The biggest increase from the D2Xs, and all Nikon DSLR cameras, is of course the full frame CMOS sensor. The CMOS sensor has always enjoyed cleaner image quality over the CCD, and it's about time Nikon is begining to catch on. Nikon has always said it would never release a full frame DSLR, mostly due to the fact that the majority of newer Nikkors are DX cropped, making them unusable with a full frame sensor. However, with the D3, Nikon solved the problem by automatically cropping the sensor when using a DX lens. This not only makes the D3 compatible with all Nikkors, new and old, but it also increases the frames per second from 9 to 11. The only downside is that the 12 mega pixel sensor drops down to somewhere around 5 mega pixels. This is a downside since the D3's 12 mega pixel CMOS is the most noted quality. For the best results, photographers should use full frame lenses, such as the new 14-24mm f2.8. Paired with the D3, this lens makes for a powerful setup. In the end, the new Nikon D3 firmly places itself in the world of professional DSLR photography. Read more Less

    Just get one.

By Dave  Feb 9, 2008 | 1 out of 2 found this Nikon D3 review helpful

Pros: Fast. Excellent image quality. If you're ever in a life-or-death situation where you need to drive a nail and find yourself without a hammer, you can use a D3 -- won't hurt it a bit.

    Cons: None.

I got my D3 just before Christmas, after having gotten onto the waiting list very early. Normally, a purchase of something this expensive would put me into terminal buyer's remorse for weeks or months. However, this thing is so positively wonderf...ul, that I haven't had a moment's regret. High-ISO performance is wonderful with minumum noise. This makes the D3 almost an available-darkness camera. I've shot in poorly-lighted indoor gardens at ISO 3200 with amazing results. As a long-time Nikon user, I find the ergonomics to be about 99.9% perfect. The only exception (and it is quite minor) is the focus mode switch on the lower left front. Once in a while, you can accidentally change its setting while taking the camera in or out of a bag or backpack. Hardly a fatal flaw; my D300 had the same switch, and I lived with it then. The finder is the brightest I have ever seen. Autofocus performance is the best I've ever experienced. Battery life is quite impressive -- I've never actually run the battery down to zero, so I don't know how many images it would take to run it down completely. But I have shot well over 2000 with the battery only getting down to about half. Of course, your mileage may easily vary depending on how much you use the LCD and how often you refocus. And, speaking of LCDs, this one must be seen to be believed. Read more Less

    Rewrote the rules

    By charles  Oct 9, 2009

    Pros: solid, low light, dependable

Cons: listening to people complain about the price

First of all you get what you pay for in life so people stop complaining about the price. If you can't understand the value and what this camera can do in terms of changing all of the past rules then its not the camera for you. Go buy a point and... shoot. Try and shoot a high school hockey game in a park district rink without this camera. Its really hard to put it mildly. This camera makes what was previously impossible possible. Read more Less

    Best in class

    By Semprasectum  Oct 7, 2009

Pros: Light deprived gyms are no longer a problem.

Cons: You won't want to shoot with anything else. . .

If you shoot high school sports in gymnasiums, you have to have this camera.

    Best Camera I've Ever Owned

    By Joe  Jun 25, 2009

    Pros: Low Light, Solid, Responsive

    Cons: Heavy, Large, Expensive

I was lucky enough to score one of the first D3s to hit the US in the fall of 2007. AFter about 30,000 shots I'd come to love the beast for all it could do -- which is literally anything you can throw at it. I don't think there is a better al...l around camera available, but for me it was simply too big and heavy, especially with fast zooms, so I went to a smaller DLSR with primes and while happy with my choices, I still miss this beast. I've been shooting for decades and have owned many Leicas, Rolleis, Nikons, Canons, Olys, and the D3 is far and away the best camera I ever used. Read more Less

Pros: Great picture quality, solid build

    believe the hype

    By ButchL  Jun 13, 2008

Pros: outstanding sports and low-light camera

    Cons: none

The low-noise stories you've heard are absolutely true. Even in dark photos at ISO 6400 where you can really start to see noise when you enlarge the image in photoshop, it's totally manageable with noise ninja (if you even bother). (For small...er prints, you probably won't even any noise from iso 6400). This low noise thing is real important because it gives you creative flexiblility in shutter speeds, especially for sports or when shooting other low-light active subjects (such as rock bands). And for daylight shooting, with a high end shutter at 1/8000, trust me, you *can* stop the action when you want to. Lots of user customization features including the ability to tweak color intensities, focus, too many feature to list. This ia an exceptional camera. Read more Less

    Low Light Miracle

    By elfuq  Mar 7, 2008

Pros: Incredibly low noise at high ISO

    Cons: Well, it's expensive

No visible noise at ISO 1600. Acceptable, and kinda nice noise at ISO 5000. It's a rock'n'roll photographer's dream. Big bright viewfinder. Enormous 3" LCD. Wish the focus points were a little closer to the edges. It's rathe...r heavy. But so way the F5 and D2X. It's a professional camera. Read more Less
