    Big bang for the buck

    Pros: Extendable lenses and flashes

    Cons: Another new battery size

    I bought this camera in preparation for a trip to Japan. I wanted a high megapixel camera for large blowups. At 12 MP, this camera delivers. It has all the shooting modes Nikon is known for, as well as full manual settings. The onscreen menu is ea...sy to navigate, and the mode wheel has all the common shooting priority modes. I love the rubber grip and thumb pad as it leaves me with the sense it is stuck in my hand and I'm not going to drop it. You can capture video with sound as most cameras do now, as well as record audio to go with your pictures to remind yourself just when, why and what you took a picture of. There are wide angle and telephoto leses available for it, as well as a hotshoe for Nikon speedflashes, in case you need to put this camera on steroids. The P5100 is a powerful camera in a tiny body, ready to handle just about anything you want to throw at it. Read more Less

    I think I'm in love

    Pros: DSLR-like manual control flexibilty, relative light-weight and footprint

    Cons: A big sluggish; placement of on-off switch is not-smart; 'slow' lens

    There's a lot to love about this camera. It's solidly made, with excellent optics, intuitive menus, easily accessible manual controls (full manual; shutter priority; aperture priority; fully automatic; and a 'modifiable' automatic mod...e Nikon calls Programmed Auto), and lots of flexibility/
    programmability (but no RAW). This camera is far more than a point-and-shoot, and it's much smaller and lighter than a DSLR, I can fit it in my pocket. So this camera is for me a good compromise: It's a bit bigger than a conventional point-and-shoot but gives the photographer *so* much more control, nearly as much as with a DSLR, and it's MUCH more portable than even the smallest DSLR. The SP5100 is, for me, a vastly scaled-down DSLR (but not in quality: excellent (if limited) optics; great image quality) that fits in my pocket. It's a near-perfect camera for me. I think I'm in love. To be fair: it's not perfect. I wish it weren't so slow (there's a noticeable lag as it processes an image), the shutter-lag is higher than in most quality point-and-shoots. And I wish the on-off switch were located somewhere else (it's right in the center of the uppermost grip of the camera, meaning I'm constantly turning it on and off without meaning to.) It's beautifully designed and solid and well-thought-out, but it's not perfect. Most of all: I do wish it were a bit smaller, a bit lighter. Even though it does fit in a pocket, it's substantially heavier and bulkier than a modern point-and-shoot. It's not quite comfortable enough to want to carry it all the time, and in the best of all worlds I'd have it with me all the time. It's *almost* that. Still, it's near-perfect: I *am* in love. (P.S. It has other capabilities (like movies, voice recording) that I don't expect to use.     Pros: Insects researcher

    Cons: Entomologist

    Very nice, friendly menu, good pictures but some little distortion in corners, and to far macro the flash don't work well for this options to take pictures for insects for example there is a dark potion in the low part of picture. Very good for l...andscapes and people but for mcro in needed yo use an external flash Read more Less

    Cons: none worth complaining about yet

    Excellent quality in a everyday point & shoot that offers many manual options for the creative. Shutter lag is less than optimal but not a big deal unless you shoot lots of action shots. Titanium body is solid, good feel in the hand. Optical viewer i...s especially nice in bright light, few new cameras have this. Excellent lens quality with 12.1 megapixel. It doesn't do it all, but what it does it does very well. It's what I'd expect from a Nikon. Read more Less

    An awesome camera to hold onto for years to come

    Pros: 12MP, light, strong case, thumb rest, full manual mode

    Cons: fair focus speed and lack of manual focus

    Lovely feature packed camera. I've had this camera for more than 3 months and I'm glad I purchased it. It performs well, even the focus speed is good if you pre-focus and/or use focus lock. The ergonomics (thumb rest and all) is great and the... magnesium body very strong...this camera will last you a long time. The ability to add an external flash and converter lens to this camera really extends its scope of use.If you are looking to break away from the compact camera realm but don't want the cost of a dSLR, buy this camera! it has full manual mode and other features not normally found on compacts. From my research of the current camera offerings I would still buy this camera again, even with the p6000 out(which uses the same sensor and battery, and adds features I'm not interested in that exhaust the battery faster ).     Pros: great for detailed blowups, quality work

    Cons: bad in low light for focusing manualy

    It's a good camera, shows detailed shots well due to the 12 mp. The menu layout is clean and easily laid out. it has many excellent options and a decent video mode with audio to match. Now for cons, first off the camera is not good at manual focu...sing in low light, litteraly can eb wuit the pain to setup in low lgiht situations. do not know why they put the red light in as whenever it needs it it will not work 2/3rds of the time. only other things i can think of is a longer shutter speed would have been nice than 8 seconds and a higher f setting that 7.other than that it really is an excellent camera . thats just hardcore nitpicking Read more Less
