I got what I paid for

By Grig  Mar 4, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Nikon Coolpix L4 Digital Camera review helpful

Pros: Small, easy to fit in pocket, cheap, nice outdoor shots

Cons: Real slow, movies don't have audio, lens developed spots

I got this camera when I went to Sweden, and my previous digital camera was dying. I had a very strict budget, and I got this at Best Buy for $109. I can honestly say that it is a $109 camera. Outdoor shots are great. Except when I use the zoom. Af...ter having this camera for only a few weeks, a dark spot started to appear in my shots whenever I use the zoom. I thought it was my LCD screen, but it showed up much clearer in my pictures. It started out light, and now when I zoom to the max, it's a solid dark spot. Recently, a second spot has shown up. The spots come and go, but they only appear in daylight photos when I tilt the camera upwards and use the zoom. So I am thinking some lint or dust got under the focus ring because I have cleaned the lens with proper camera cleaner, and it does nothing to remove it. Indoor shots are hit and miss. The first thing you notice is that if you use the flash, it takes 1-3 seconds for the camera to decide to actually shoot. When the batteries start to drain halfway, this becomes intolerably longer (often 3-8 seconds from pressing the shutter to actual shot). This makes action shots nearly impossible. I have used both high-energy digital camera batteries and regular alkaline. A set of 2 AA's will last you about 90 pictures, slightly less with rechargeable. Sometimes you can coax more battery life by turning the camera off and on and disabling the boot screen. The red-eye-reducing flash doesn't seem to work very well, either. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I haven't been able to duplicate when it does or doesn't. Sometimes the memory of last settings "forgets." I had to turn my flash off for courtesy reasons in museums, but sometimes when I turn the camera back on, it resets to default flash. Filing anything indoor without the flash results in SERIOUS motion blur, even if your subject keeps still, simply the shaking of your own pulse will blur the picture. It completely needs the flash indoors, even if it's relatively bright, it will do blur without the flash. The flash is bright and harsh, and will often cause the camera to focus/white balance on the wrong thing. Like taking a picture of a kid blowing out birthday candles in a dim room? Forget it. You'll get a washed out picture of the frosting on the cake, and dark crescent of the kid's face. But... maybe I ask too much from a $109 camera. But when I can afford a better one, I am giving this camera to a small child. Read more Less

    Great Everyday Use

    By Gayle  Mar 11, 2007

    Pros: Small pocket sized

Cons: uses AA and not rechargeable Li-ion battery

I am so bad with electronic devices. But I am a preschool teacher and I take candid shots almost everyday. I spent the big bucks on an Optio 5mpix only to drop it after 3 months and shatter the LCD screen. My husband got me a 5 Mpix Kodak and it was... stolen 6 months later. I swore never to have a camera again. However, my husband owns a Nikon 4Mpix digicam that is now 8 years old that I have dropped, left in the sun, allowed kids to use and it still takes the greatest pics. So this prompted the purchase of a cheaper Nikon for me in the classroom. I've had it for a year and it is perfect for everything I do. Even night shots or indoor low light action shots. I love ALL the different features of the menu. My advise though is take some time to get to know the camera and the features so you know what feature to use when you need it for those at-that-minute shots. If you just want to take pics of everyday goings-on, this is a great inexpensive alternative. And so far Nikon is the toughest best long lasting camera I have found...better than a Timex! Decent enough happy snaps camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 25, 2007

    Pros: Picture quality is good

Cons: No audio in movies, no aperture or shutter priority

Its small, its cheap, it takes good photos in daylight. It comes with lots of "modes" to take photos in ie portrait, night, sports, museum etc etc. There's so many its confusing. I end up just shooting in fully auto. What I don't u...nderstand is why they didn't include 2 manual controls - aperture and shutter priority - this would make the camera so much more useful. Movies without sound - pretty useless. Even my camera phone has sound. 4 megapixels are enough for standard size and enlargements up to A4 or US letter size. So if you want a cheap camera to take happy snaps and are ok with using a flash at nightime, then this is more than adequate. Read more Less

Really great for point and shoot.

    By Lisa  Jan 7, 2007

Pros: Small, easy to carry, easy to use, inexpensive.

Cons: No audio, takes a little long to focus than expected.

This is the first digital camera I have owned and I love it. I think I made a good choice. Auto focus is great, the different features are nice. I have been using it to snap pics and load on the pc and share over the internet with family and friends.... That's what I wanted it for and that's what it does. Excellent!! Read more Less

Great First or Happy Snap Camera

    By KerryJ  Dec 14, 2006

Pros: Decent pic quality, easy to use, force flash

Cons: Weak flash, limited zoom range

I bought this for an overseas trip/family reunion and it did not disapoint. Pic quality is good, not great and some of the automatic features are a bit silly, but overall this camera has served me well. It is lovely and light to hold and I carry it e...verywhere. For the price range (around $AU225 incl GST), this was just what I was looking for. Plus, as someone who wears glasses, the large LCD viewfinder with adjustable brightness was one of the deciding factors for me. If you are in need of a zoom lens to get wildlife shots from a distance, this isn't the camera for you. If you are looking for a portable, happy snap camera with decent optics to take portraits, landscapes and macros - this is your camera. Read more Less
