Thoughts after 5+ years 2/5700
Pros: viewer image quality; ease and options for use, Nikon tech is superb.
Cons: Sensor bugged out, electronics fragile or buggy
From around 2000-2003 I used my first digital camera, and it helped me transition from film-thinking to image rendering and presentation (online and large-print). Coolpix 990 was/is the best camera ever except for the dysfunctional battery door.
In 2004, anticipating an extended time in some beautiful European cities, I bought the 5700, higher megapixels, looked more like a camera, better at video (I thought). Results: Some great images of vistas in Europe, from Pont de d'Eume to Prague.... BUT... as others have commented on, it is slow, slow, slow, for anything faster than an ice drift. I'd say "ok, 123, and smile for 8 seconds now!), or use the 990. Lag time is truly bad. Now I use a DSLR, and look back, wishing I could have a new 990 to accompany the D300. Something with swivel body to help "take notes" from media presentations.
The summer after hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans, I was there, and took the 5700 with me as I toured the Canal zones, on land and by boat. The 5700, which had intermittently been "going psychadelic" in the image results (fringing in multi-colors, like 3-D images), suddenly went totally blooey. On one occasion I had no backup camera (stupid, yes) and I lost a memory of historical significence. ;-( So I was angry at the 5700. Called Nikon. They repaired it, new sensor, adjustments, etc., gratis. I can't fault Nikon but I'm spooked by this particular model, and wish they'd bring back an exact Coolpix 990 or 995 with total control, swivel body, ease of use, AND a battery door which lasts more than a few months.Was this review helpful? I was surprise that there is a Nikon camera that is user friendly in terms of its features and use. I highly recommend this camera for beginners who want to own an SLR someday.

I doubt you can buy these new any more. This is a full-featured point & shoot that probably has more buttons and gizmos than the average user will need. I have taken it all over the world. The extra AA battery case has been a life saver because you can't always charge the primary battery. It also adds some bulk to the camera. When this is good it;s very, very good, but when it is bad, well, it's a shame. The zoom does not focus well. You take your chances. You have to use a higher-quality image to get good pictures. It does not do well in low light, which includes anything indoors, no matter what. There is a noticeable lag between push and picture. You can't easily adjust settings either. About 2 years into it the camera failed. It took me awhile to find out there was a recall on them. I sent it in as per directions and they fixed it quickly. I've also had flash cards go crazy on me for no reason. You have to be very careful with that set up and use only cards of lower memory. Don't put all your pics on a large card or you commit to that card. Pretty good for a point & shoot, but I'm feeling the need for an SLR. My old Canon A-1 is great. Of course, it uses film.

Have owned the 5700 for almost 3 years now and must report that it has exceeded all expectations. Strongly recommend adding the battery grip accessory. (MB-E5700) It improves the balance of the camera and battery life is incredible with it.
Movie mode is great but wish it didn't have the one minute time limit.
The electronic viewfinder is the only major complaint I have for this camera. It is slow and takes practice to use efficiently.
I have used this camera under very extreme conditions, sub-zero temperatures, salt water environments, dusty deserts and love how nothing stops this camera from doing it's job.
Highly recommended, particularly now that price has come down so much. Excellent image quality and RAW mode option is a plus.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoSTOLEN COOLPIX 5700

I researched the Nikon 5700 and liked it so decided to order it at the best price on the net, but months later no camera in the mail, only excuses from a couple venders. so I decided to pay a higher price to see if I could get one. Got it within a week, (things that make you go Hmmmm?) Then comes the mail in 100 dollar rebate from Nikon, after playing mail tag with nikon rebate center for 3 months I told them to take the hundred dollar rebate and stick it where the sun don't shine. If they don't want to give rebates don't offer them. I followed their rebate instructions the best I could. they didn't like the reciept the company in new york sent with my camera and disreguarded all the bar codes and proof of purchase seals and barcodes they also wanted. so good luck on the rebate guys! It is now over 1 year since I purchased it, and taking pictures In Roatan near Honduras and got my fingers wet and caused the picture button to malfunction, guys It only takes a drop of water to screw this comera! poor design of the picture button, it needs to be at least domewhat water resistant,(I never had a problem with my cheap Olympus digital, ($400) by the way I put about 1200 dollars into this Nikon 5700 including batterys and memory cards and few other extras. Sorry Nikon but I think my next digital camera will be a Cannon. And I am Sick of the rebate game, what the H**l is up with that anyway? just give me that much off when I buy it.
