The Posies - Nice Cheekbones and A Ph. D

    By William  Mar 17, 2002

A good 5 song EP featuring the beautiful "With Those Eyes", and "Chainsmoking In The U.S.A.". "With Those Eyes" is a song about a doe-eyed beauty who can get away with anything; it kind of has the feel of the pre-disco Bee Gees ballads from the comp...osition right down to the vocal performances. I'm sure that the early Bee Gees must have been the inspiration. The Posies have often admitted to the influence of Chris Bell on their music, and "Chainsmoking In The U.S.A." is probably the closest that they've come to the authentic Chris Bell sound. This is a song that would be right at home on Bell's - I Am The Cosmos album. "Chainsmoking..." also has some of the most meaningful social commentary that the Posies have put into lyrics; the lyrics seem to paint an America that is losing its regional cultures and characteristics, and turning into the same homogenized landscape from sea to shining sea with subburbs with the same chainstores, the same chain-fast food, same large discount stores, and the same chain nightclubs making it "way to easy" for us to feed petty addictions to consumerism while we may be missing the more important parts of life. This EP is probably not as good as the previous Posies album Sucess which was absolutely stellar, but it is better than most of what is on the market today and definitely worth checking out. • All Music Guide

Like 2000's live LP, In Case You Didn't Feel Like Plugging In, this EP finds the Posies in an acoustic bent. Like a second helping of "Posies MTV Unplugged" -- only this time it's new material -- Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow's songs and harmonies are strong enough to carry the more barebones, basic approach. When they sing "It's getting way too easy" on "Chainsmoking in the U.S.A." with a pretty piano plinking away behind them, it does seem almost too elementary for these guys -- except that the '60s power pop hooks that have served them so well still work fine, even without louder backing. And who wouldn't consider such a nice cover of David Crosby's lost Byrds gem "Lady Friend" (an overwhelming reason to buy the Byrds' box set) anything but a treat? Take it from us, old Crosby never wrote a more affecting song in the '60s this side of "Everybody's Been Burned," and it's just the sort of amazing, prime Byrds-esque harmony the Posies excel at. Now, boys, how about cranking up these do...rmant amps of yours one more time for us? This quiet little gift is way, way better than nothing, and a tide-me-over is very considerate of you. But you know what our hearts ultimately crave. - Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Posies

The Posies were one of the most popular power-pop bands of the ‘90s; along with other revivalists like Matthew Sweet and Teenage Fanclub, they helped update the classic power-pop sound for the alternative age, marrying bright, British Invasion-style melodies and harmonies to loud, grungy guitars and quirky lyrics. The Posies were centered around the partnership of guit... Read more
