What happened to the grown up Chely?
, May 13, 2002I liked "Single White Female." Admittedly, you could pick out the singles a mile away, but overall it was the story of a complex woman searching for love and trying to get it right. This is still basically that--minus the woman. In her place is a teenage girl who is unwilling to question or even look too closely at anything for fear of being unpopular. Remeber that literary genre called Young Adult--the one with the little Soap Opera romances and cheezy movie of the week dramas that assumes we are too stupid to handle anything more subtle? This is that, set to music.
Take, for example the first single, "Never Love You Enough." Who would have thought there would be something out there that could make "It Was" seem profound? Here is the story of a girl, with no apparent life (or job) of her own singing about how she will fill the empty hours (all 24/7) creating his life (a move which should leave him packing in a week). Is she is girlfriend, or his stalker? In "Jezebel" she is trash talking the girl her boyfriend is cheating on her with, assuring the audience that she will get him back, without ever giving a single reason why she wants to. Does she want the man or simply want to win and if it is the latter, why does she view romance as a competition between women? Between the sappy sentiment and the hackneyed revenge plots one wonders why she keeps refering to resturants--can't they just go to study hall?
At it's best this album is a collection of overused and overwrought cliches;at it's worst it is a mishmash of every negative sterotype out there about women. However, one cannot even hate it for that because it seems to lack the deapth to know that these sterotypes are not real. If Wright were sixteen and just starting out this would be an okay album--however by age 32 she should have a deeper sense of life and love that this ablum represents.
PS. Please note that I am not saying that all teenage girls are shallow, overdramatized princesses; merely the fact that music, television, movies and literature are marketed to them as though they are. And that a 32 year old woman should be more complex than she was at 16. ...

| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Personable and traditional, Wright is the bland new face of country. On 1999's Single White Female, she struck a feminist pose for all 21st century Dixie chicks, taking the voice of the modern everywoman on a cycle of songs detailing the little parts of working and non-working relationships. This more conservative follow-up finds her back on the farm, still tracking the ins and outs of love, but accompanied by a shrugging indifference. Ultimately, it orbits around the concept of love as an unquestionable force, even something to fall back on. Single White Female was all about breaking from tradition; Never Love You Enough is about getting it all back.
