EA GAMES' vaunted Need for Speed series, which first hit the gas in 1995 on the 3DO platform, continues with the multi-platform release of Need for Speed: Underground. As the title suggests, players are embroiled in the shadowy world of illicit street racing. Players will enlist in various underground events held on city streets at dusk. While battling rivals in drag races or more conventional pursuits, players can earn cash used to purchase an assortment of vehicle modifications. Over 20 licensed cars are available to tweak and customize from such manufacturers as Mitsubishi, Toyota, and Suburu, among others. Developed by the same team responsible for 2002's Hot Pursuit 2, the game also features official parts from Bilstein, Audiobahn, Dazz Motorsport, and other providers. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Pros: Total Package fits together well

Cons: Graphics blend at times, difficult to see - speed factor?

My brother in-law mentioned this game in passing a few days ago, little did I know the lengths I'd go to just to rent this game for a few days. I live in a moderate size town, with at least 20-25 video stores. It's fair to say that last frida...y night virtually "all of them" did not have this game available to rent. Not since Vice City had I ever seen such a phenomenon. Nevertheless, I'm never outdone by such circumstances, considering a game of this magnitude. I drove 25 miles just to rent a copy, and wasn't displeased in the least. Anyone interested in being able to tinker with modifications will love this game. The diffficulty level is progressive, plenty of cars, and mods to choose from. I couldn't walk away from this game, as it offers a steady challenge (Yes, you just might throw your PS2 controller at the wall). The races are that intense, and realistic, that you simply hate to lose. I can honestly say this is a worthwhile game, with mindblowing options, playability, sound and graphics.Anyone who believes this game won't affect your driving, probably believes guns don't kill people. Why the heck would anyone buuild a tuner if they didn't intend to race on highways? The game's introductory offers a weak commentary, just as Fast & the Furious did (hundreds as a result have died from street racing). The game bears that fine of a line between fantasy and reality, that it would be easy to transfer such agression to the road. I'm just being honest, hook me up with an Eclipse, and some NOS.. and well, let's just say I'll have a hard time seeing the speed limit. The game is truly awesome, but I'm sure the average cop might just have other ideas. Read more Less

    Need for Speed Underground 2

Just the same, there's something almost absurd about paying for a game that inundates you with a constant stream of ads. While this might have helped belay development costs, the marketing attack on the player here takes away from the actual gameplay. Read more
