Pros: great visuals, story and meaning.
Cons: For the full effect watch the directors cut.
I'd like to start off by saying that NBK is one of the best movie I've seen. I love the interesting use of visuals(for more great visuals see House of 1000 Corpses but that's another story)to relay emotion and hidden symbolism. The story is enthralling as well as the characters and diologue(go Tarantino).
Now to the naysayers that said "Violence, violence, violence!" Well, it is about two mass murderers so yeah it's going to be violent. It's also about the superstar status society holds these people to(Manson anyone?). But for those that failed to look even closer it's a love story. One of the best right there w/ True Romance(Tarantino!) and Bram Stokers Dracula. Underneath it all these two are simply in love. Woody Harrelson said it best in the pre riot scene,"Love beats the demon."
In closing I would like to say before you condemn look closer sometimes. And sometimes don't look so close. It is entertainment after all.
Honestly I was like many of the negative reviews, in that Natural Born Killers is very incoherent and nonsensical. However, I was watching it on cable/satellite the other day, and decided to search for a meaning. After all nobody makes a film depicting this much realism for no reason. Well in my humble opinion there is more to this movie than maybe at first glance. It doesn't necessarily glorify violence one way in another, but instead serve a point of the preying media conglomerate
. It shows that the only people who glorify the violence are not the two killers, but the people and media who fall in love with the two lead characters. For instance dirty cop who kills the woman, just to feel what it's like to kill somebody. He copycatted the violence that was being shown around him by the duo killers. So it was showing, in my opinion maybe too subtle, a way for some viewers, the hypocrisy of how anybody can be fooled into loving murder. It's something that perhaps is less an issue in our post-9/11 time, but during the mid-90's it the issue was more timely.
He has done a great job with this movie. This movie however, is hard to understand and is not for ignorant people. Under the violence there's a lesson or moral to be learned.
He captures todays society and puts it into the two main caractors. Why they are the way they are.
Great movie. Not for small children.
I agree with the reveiw below this one. I was in an abusive foster home for 2 years during my teen years. And I was constantly ridiculed in school all my life. But a rough childhood does not justify murder, it does not even justify hatred. If everyone had the same kind of attitude that the killers in this movie had then the world would be even worse then it is now.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen.I was very angry after seeing this charade because it symbolizes a lot of what is wrong in a lot of movies.Senseless violence for no rhyme or reason.Studios make this trash and justify this by calling it art.Is it art though that a lot of people have copycated a lot of the murders in this movie. This movie deserves a X rating and banned to be sold to minors.
this film captures the tragic lives of two people who are a product of their society. they are young and surrounded by a world of violence, perversion, & confusion.Their only hope in the world is to take revenge on the world and find true love and strength in eachother.
the feeling that the mixed cinematic styles gives is perfect for the message being conveyed. don't let the media fool you into thinking this is just another splatter flick.
All you jabronies that gave this crap movie 5 stars, The Rock says this: he's gonna take that remote control of yours. Then he'll take the batteries out, lube it up, TURN THAT SONUVABITCH SIDEWAYS AND STICK IT STRAIGHT UP YOUR CANDY-ASSES!!!
Natural Born Killers is the kind of film that freeze you with the feelings of a new generation: our generation; full of violence, love, passion, where in the main actors we can see the representation of the need to fight for what we want, in this case just like a scape, if we include the violence.
...they even give you a real life idea, jokin, being ironics; two persons made for each other...
This is an interesting film that deserves the found of the details.
I really enjoy the film's songs, and love the colors and spirit on it.
It's possible that Oliver Stone was on some kind of heavy acid trip when making "Natural Born Killers"
Working from Tarantino's original screenplay about two serial killers (Mickey and Mallory Knox) who are transformed into media folk heroes, Stone has created an incomprehensible,
exhausting mishmash puncturated by heavy crosscutting, multiple film stocks, flashbacks and flash forwards.
This technique worked beautifully in "JFK" because the material warranted it.
In "Natural Born Killers," it comes off as self indulgent experimentation, like a kid who's disocvered how to use a new toy and who's going to use it no matter what....
It could also be that Stone was just going through a "David Lynch" period when working on NBK.
This new DVD version has a lot to reccomend it, though.
It comes complete with the alternate ending; deleted and extended scenes and a commentary by Stone which is more entertaining than the film itself.
In truth, "Natural Born Killers" tells us a lot more about Oliver Stone than it does about the subject matter.
(Warning: this review gives away the plot, if there is one)
This movie was a little bit boring. The violence wasn't as bad as I thought it would be-- Saving Private Ryan and many Vietnam movies were more graphic. The occasional change from color to black and white was random and pointless.
Mickey and Mallory kill a lot of people who the audience isn't given enough information to really care about, except for the Robert Downey Jr. character, and he's not sympathetic. This movie can't decide whether itÂ’s a sick comedy or a psychological thriller. Rodney Dangerfield was a mistake. He's certainly not scary, so this must be a comedy. But sexual abuse isn't funny. Am I missing something here?
Tommy Lee Jones was completely wasted in his role as the warden (which wasn't a believable character, nor was he funny). If they had created a serious, smart character like he played in The Fugitive or U.S. Marshals, it would have had much more impact when he was thrown at the mercy of the rioters.
It was simply not believable that the prison guards would allow 52-person murderer to walk around during an interview without being in chains, not believable that he wasn't chained and taken to his cell the minute word of a riot came, not believable that Mickey was able to grab someone's gun and kill all those people who had guns.
Then there was the bad cop. How incredibly stupid does one have to be to come on to a mass murderess alone in her jail cell? Was anyone a "good" guy or gal in this movie? It's kinda one-dimensional to have only bad people in your movie.
The ending was very predictable. A better ending would be for Downey to grab their guns while they were kissing for the camera and kill them both and then go on a murderous rampage using the skills he picked up from the late Mickey and Mallory.
Then there's the very end-- Mickey and Mallory have three children and live happily ever after. Mass murderers with zero respect for human life do not decide to suddenly go and have children. Not believable.
My understanding is that Oliver Stone made this movie to be a statement about the media, but I think the only way to explain this movie in a respectful way is to proclaim it a self-parody about a Hollywood filmaker who produced violent, prurient, empty shlock which was gobbled up by critics and audiences and pronounced a "classic."
Woody Harrelson(Money Train,Edtv)and Juliette Lewis(From Dusk Till Dawn,Kalifornia)star as a couple of killers in love. The stalk everyone who comes across them on the 666 highway. Robert Downey Jnr. stars as a reporter who makes them famous, soon the couple of Mickey and Mallory Knox are famous around the globe. The Directors cut contains extra footage that the regular version doesn't. In Australia (where I live) this movie is rated R. Movies in America that are rated R are rated M in australia(PG-13)for Example the matrix is rated M. So this film is not suitable for young children. Anyways Tommy Lee Jones also stars. This movie is great.
Natural Born Killers, some love it, some hate it, although the ones that hate it are just to afraid to accept the fact that this is where our country is headed. This is a film from the killer's point of view. People say that this film has no message but I totaly disagree. The message to this movie is that our country has become so obsessed with violence that it has become one of the only forms of entertainment. All this film does is enforce the sad truth. In a way this film was loosely based on the O.J. Simpson murder trail of 1994 (the year this film was released). In 1994 the only topic of disscusion was if O.J. was guilty or not, the media glorified this trail so much that no one stopped to realize that two people had been murdered and the killer had either been set free or was never found. This film is extreamly well acted with Oscar worthy profamnces by: Woody Harelson as the duragened Mickey Knox, Juliet Lewis his wife as Mallory Knox, Robert Downey Jr. as the sneaky T.V. reporter, Tommy Lee Jones as the ignorant prison warden, and Tom Sizemore as the sick cop who becomes obsessed with capturing Mickey and Mallory. In my opinion this is one of the best films you will ever see...if you are not frightend to see the truth.
This movie is an extreme movie for extreme killer want-a-bees. Woody performs wonderfully... A tale of two lovers sticking by each other through thick and thin.
Some, many in fact, will say that this film by
the legendary director, Oliver Stone, is in fact, a
waste of 2 hours. Evidently, these persons are not
getting A: the message of the film, and B: the humour
which dwells within it. There are funny scenes, from
the redneck in the bar scared to death at the
beginning, to Tommy Lee Jones worried and sweating at the
end, at the cause of the prison riot. There are
violent scenes aplenty, but most of all, there are
spiritual scenes, I.E the Indian in the tent releasing the
inner demons of the troubled Mickey Knox. To me, this
movie is a Black Comedy with an edge in that it conveys
the message that the media is somewhat corrupt, and
certainly influencial over
today's society. The
1960's-type comedy where daughter Knox is considered a slave,
is simply difficult not to chuckle at, especially
when the father goes head down into the fishbowl.
With some cartoony scenes irritating, but other scenes
and messages outweighing them, this is a movie worth
buying.
This is one of the best movies ever made. It is a
really beautiful love story between two persons who has
found true love. The whole movie is about Mickey and
Mallory Knox, two serial killers on a killer tour through
texas, the power of media, and what tragic child hood
can drive one to.
It has alot of strong images,
the whole movie is a beautiful love story.
Garbage. This film is a milestone, marking the exact spot where Stone ceases to strive to make "good" films in favor of "cool" films. An insulting barrage of editing techniques that do little to advance the story makes the backdrop to a half-baked plot acted out in a style that can only be described as "cartoonish". Stone supposedly made this film to show the power of the media. Well, he succeeded. The film duped the American movie audience into thinking it was worthwhile.
this is probably the best film ever.
perfect
mixture between the very good and deep story and making
fun of a sick society. amazing, how the pictures in
the movie are placed. plus a great soundtrack. in
this movie everything fits 100 %.
