Pro Reviews: Nadia's Theme (The Young & The Restless)

EXPERT RATING:

From AMG Reviews

Many years after he started out as a professional songwriter and an aspiring teen pop star, Barry de Vorzon made a surprising chart comeback with "Nadia's Theme," the instrumental theme from the television soap opera The Young and the Restless. The melody, originally titled "Cotton's Dream," had been written by de Vorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr. for the 1971 film Bless the Beasts and Children but was retitled and recycled with great success. The theme made the Top Ten, giving de Vorzon his biggest hit as a recording artist. Shortly thereafter, two competing albums with the same title were released by different record labels. The one on AM contained three recordings by de Vorzon and miscellaneous recordings by other artists, but the one on Arista was entirely de Vorzon's show. The former was the bigger seller, but the latter is the focus of this review. The light, melodic touch of de Vorzon's early work can be heard on this allinstrumental album, even though it is in a completely different milieu. His renditions of Eric Carmen's "All by Myself," and Barry Manilow's "I Write the Songs" give some indication of the melodic direction he takes with own compositions, while his "Theme From S.W.A.T." reminds listeners that de Vorzon is no newcomer to making music for television. "Bless the Beasts and Children," another song from the film that introduced "Nadia's Theme," also became a minor hit, but spelled the end of de Vorzon's return to the charts.
