The first five-on-five basketball game on the Nintendo 64, NBA In the Zone '98 is a continuation of Konami's basketball series that debuted on the PlayStation in 1995. The 64-Meg NBA In the Zone '98 features 3D polygonal graphics and authentic players, stadiums, and teams based on the 1997 ~NBA season. A total of four modes of play are available for up to four players: Exhibition, Season, Playoffs, and All-Star Game.

Players with a ~Rumble Pak accessory will be able to "feel" each dunk, and a ~Controller Pak is required in order to save individual and team statistics accumulated during the season. Among the settings players can customize are quarter length, stamina, game difficulty, controls, camera angle, and individual rules such as fouls, shot clock violation, and goal tending. ~ Glenn Wigmore, All Game Guide
