Pro Reviews: Mystics Meet the Jarmels
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The Jarmels only ever released 12 songs on six singles, but this compilation has fourteen, two previously unreleased numbers ("Why Am I a Fool for You," "You Don't Believe a Word I Say") having surfaced during the preparation of this disc. The sound fairly glitters throughout, the original session tapes having been found, which also allows for the first stereo release of everything here except "A Little Bit of Soap" and the two new discoveries. The sound here is pretty diverse, ranging from catchy soul ("A Little Bit of Soap") and rousing dance pieces ("She Loves to Dance") to ethereal ballads ("Keep Your Mind On Me"), although the Drifters' influence is pretty strong, especially on songs like "One By One" and their debut, "Little Lonely One." Some of this material, such as "Why Am I a Fool for You," may be considered doo wop, but most of their records were more sophisticated than that, and not quite that pop-oriented. - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |
