Lombard and Powell shine!

If you're a fan of classic screwball comedy you can't miss My Man Godfrey. When spoilt, haughty Cornelia Bullock (the brilliantly sardonic Gail Patrick) has to find a forgotten man for a scavenger hunt she cites Godfrey (William Powell) as the perfec...t candidate. Godfrey stands firm and refuses her but later says yes to her bubbly younger sister Irene played by Carole Lombard. Irene then employs him as the family butler and that's where the real fun begins. Between working on his own little business and butling Godfrey teaches the eccentric, well to do Bullock's a thing or two about life. Not suprisingly, Irene falls in love with him. This is a brilliant film with a superb cast led by a debonair Powell, and Lombard turns in a hilarious performance as Irene. The supporting cast is also fabulous - with a wisecracking Eugene Pallette as Mr Bullock, Alice Brady as his scatterbrained wife, Mischa Auer as the mooching artist/protege Carlo and Jean Dixon as Molly. My favourite however is Gail Patrick who exudes a cool, controlled elegance as older sister Cornelia.All in all this film rocks and should not be missed! Read more Less
