    Autobiographical Smash Hit!

By Eric Halcon  Aug 11, 2007

    Pros: Read Between The Lines

    Cons: Almost none

Mary J. Blige would never earn the title of "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" for no reason at all. Late in 1994, MCA Records released her sophomore album simply called "My Life", which frankly chronicled her experiences in life and love in... general. Hailed as one of her best works to date, "My Life" hit the streets in a time when Blige was also fighting her demons. Unlike her upbeat debut album, "What's the 411?", her next effort carried a darker, funkier and more serious tone. The success of the album could be largely attributed to the talented production team of Andre Harrell and Sean "Puffy" Combs, who would later pursue a career as a rap artist in the late 90s. "Be Happy" became the first single to be culled from the album and performed well on the charts. Blige, who was recovering from a failed relationship with K-Ci Hailey of Jodeci, apparently poured her heart and soul in the making of this album. "You Bring Me Joy" and "I Love You" saw the light of day as singles and performed modestly in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1995. The track "I'm Going Down" is actually a remake of Rose Royce's hit single penned by Norman Whitfield in the 1970s. Candid, raw and sincere, "My Life" has been touted by both critics and fans as Blige's best work to date. It is even noted as one of the Top 500 albums of the Rolling Stone Magazine recently. Now that popular music is driven by fancy clothes and videos, nothing beats outright honesty in one's work. You can count Blige and her life to do just that. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: My Life

  • All Music Guide

Perhaps the single finest moment in Sean "Puffy" Combs' musical career has been the production on this, Mary J. Blige's second proper album. The production is not exactly original, and there is evidence here of him borrowing wholesale from other songs. The melodic sources this time around, though, are so expertly incorporated into the music that they never seem to be intrusions, instead playing like inspired dialogues with soulsters from the past, connecting past legacies with a new one. This certainly isn't your parents' (or grandparents') soul. But it is some of the finest modern soul of the '90s, backing away to a certain extent from the hip-hop/soul consolidation that Blige introduced on her debut album. The hip-hop part of the combination takes a few steps into the background, allowing Blige's tortured soul to carry the album completely, and it does so with heartwrenching authority. My Life is, from beginning to end, a brilliant, wistful individual plea of desire. Blige took a hug...e leap in artistry by penning almost everything herself (the major exception being Norman Whitfield's "I'm Going Down") in collaboration with co-producers Combs and multi-instrumentalist Chucky Thompson, and everything seems to leap directly from her gut. Blige's strain is sleekly modern and urban, and the grit in it comes from being streetwise and thoroughly realistic about the travails of life. My Life, nevertheless, emanates from some deep, dark place where both sadness and happiness cohabitate and turn into one single, beautiful sorrow. - Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Mary J. Blige

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern RB with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, NY childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha Franklin, Blige had little in common stylistically with either of those artis... Read more
