Alabama's debut, has the title track and why lady why as highlights. The rest is pleasant.

A foreshadowing of what was to come

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 9, 2001

My folks purchased this album (in the vinyl format) for me in 1983, a time when Alabama was among my favorite artists. I enjoyed the band's country sound and showmanship, and it has remained with me to this day. This album, Alabama's first, contained... their first four top 40 hits -- "I Wanna Come Over" (October 1979), the title track (January 1980), "Tennessee River" (June 1980) and "Why Lady Why" (October 1980) The first song listed isn't thought of in the same light as the long string of hits that would follow for the guys from Fort Payne, AL, since it only reached the Top 30, but Randy Owen's skills as a ballad singer shone through, as they also did on the eerie-sounding "Why Lady Why." I prefer the longer version of the title track (included on this album) to the single edit often played on radio (though the local radio station here always played the long version). "My Home's in Alabama" and "Tennessee River" were showcases of sorts for the band's southern rock sound, foreshadowing what was to come. Heck, the entire My Home's in Alabama album was a foreshadowing of the sound Randy, Teddy, Jeff and Mark would put out during the next 20 years or so. Read more Less

This is the album that introduced Alabama as one of the biggest hitmaking country/pop bands of the '80s. While the disc contains what was termed "countryrock" at the time, this is nothing like Lynyrd Skynyrd or even Hank Williams Jr. at his rowdiest. The closest thing to countryrock among these ten tracks is the sixminuteand27second title track. The earliest representation of the band's developing sound includes the ballad "Why Lady Why" and the fiddleheavy "Tennessee River," both hit singles. Al Campbell, All Music Guide

Biography

Alabama

Before Alabama, bands were usually relegated to a supporting role in country music. In the first part of the century, bands were popular with audiences across the country, but as recordings became available, nearly every popular recording artist was a vocalist, not a group. Alabama was the group that made country bands popular again. Emerging in the late '70s, the band ... Read more
