Excellent Movie
Frankie Muniz does an outstanding job in his role of this movie. He is an exceptional and gifted actor that lights up the screen very well, indeed. As you watch his character grow up, you can't help but become soft hearted and feel as tho you are reliving your childhood over again. It's an emotional rollercoaster with realistic events that will make you reach for you kleenex more than one time. If you like Malcolm in the Middle, you'll see a different acting side of this handsome young man that you never knew existed.

Highly recommended! I really loved this movie for a number of reasons. It was such a pleasure to go to a movie and not be assaulted by foul language, and people cavorting around in illicit and immoral sex. It just had so much in it that almost everyone experiences in his life. Meeting some nice girl, going across the street to talk to the next door kids, discovering that your heroes may not be so perfect after all, dealing with bullies at school, discovering what magical creatures animals are... Brings back how it felt to be a kid again in such a wonderful way. I'm not a Kevin Bacon fan, and I was surprised to see him in this kind of movie. But he gives a wonderfully restrained supporting performance that is just right - somewhat gruff dad, who doesn't always get it right, but basically still a loving, caring dad. I hate to say it, but I would never watch this movie with someone else - I get a little,um... you know... worry about needing some kleenex and it embarasses the h out of me. I can't put this in the same class as some movies that raise challenging, cerebral issues, but for pure warmth, and good-heartedness, this movie can't be touched. Long after you've forgotten about those empty multi-jillion dollar special effects movies, you'll think about this one and smile to yourself. A real gem if you ask me.

Aside from some of the time period errors in the movie, it was good. Much better than expected. However, I am much more into movies that are meticulous about details. If the year was around 1942 then the dialogue and scenery must adhere to that! There were a few places in the movie where we would see things such as a basketball net! In 1942 they still were shooting at an actual basket...not a net! Some of the dialogue through the movie used modern terms, rather than 50 or 60 years ago lingo. I just felt that if this film would have been more careful with these small mistakes it would have been more authentic.

We have seen the movie four times--cried in all four--just as much in the last as in the first. I knew Willie personally, and though the movie pictured him well, it was still an understatement of the greatness of this man whom I believe to be the most beloved of all Mississippi writers. This is a movie for all to see--yes, that includes you who may consider yourselves too sophisticated to see a movie with a name like "My Dog Skip". You will love it. I promise! this movie was very enjoyable and good for the whole family. It's a true story and the relationship between a boy and his dog, a movie that will be loved by all. I highly reccommend this movie for all ages.
