    The End?

    By Judgement  Nov 30, 2001

Fresh from the alluring magnum opus that was "Aegis", I of course greatly anticipated the release of this album. Unfortunatley, all my enthusiasm was for naught. It seems TOT wanted to abandon the style that served them well and descended into the aw...ful techno-pop mainstream. Sure there is a touch of their old goth-metal but only a brief caress if anything and only that it will stay. I really wonder why most of the band members (Except Rymond and Liv) haven't quit because this new sound really doesn't need them too much. I hope TOT recovers and returns to their old stuff but acording to their website, that doesn't seem to be happenning anytime soon. 1 star for the effort, another for ear-worthy periods, and the last for good ol' times sake. I would give another for Liv but that would be doing too much. Dream of the past! Read more Less

Much was made during the '90s about Theatre of Tragedy's goth metal potential, and more often than not, releases from the group never quite lived up to that high standard that the band seemed capable of. Sadly, Musique disappoints in exactly this fashion. The performances and material are generally tighter and more dynamic than earlier efforts, but the strange chanting from covocalist Raymond Rohonyi is actually less compelling than the "beauty and the beast" death metal growl employed on earlier outings. Liv Kristine Espenaes seems more comfortable during her angelic vocal sections and Frank Claussen (guitars), Lorentz Aspen (keyboards), and drummer Hein Frode Hansen also provide solid contributions. When considered with the rest of Theatre of Tragedy's oeuvre, Musique comes off a little disjointed, even aimless, and suggests that this pioneering but challenged outfit might never take a preeminent position in their microgenre.

Theatre of Tragedy

Formed out of Norway's famed black metal scene, Theatre of Tragedy combine elements of goth and metal with an added touch of drama thanks in part to the dual vocals of Raymond I. Rohonyi and Liv Kristine Espenaes. With the accompaniment of Frank Claussen (guitars), Tommy Olsson (guitars/programming), Eirik T. Saltroe (bass), Hein Frode Hansen (drums) and Lorentz Aspen (... Read more
