1 Music 90 Excellent song and production style. Excellent use of vocoder. Magic. 2 Impressive Instant 81 A busy melody, innovative use of vocoder. Good song. 3 Runaway Lover 79 Another good song, with quirky production ideas and interesting use of el...ectronica. 4 I Deserve It 83 Brilliant blend of simple chords on acoustic guitar, lovely melody, simple backing rhythm, and a synthesizer line that sounds like an overhead sunset skyrocket! Madonna plays the guitar part when performing this song live in concert, to rapturous applause! When I hear it, for some reason, I think of driving late at night on a highway with the radio on. Great song. 5 Amazing 77 The "Beautiful Stranger" of this album - harking back to the 1960s upbeat groovy dance style. Jangly guitars, fuzzy chords, strong vocal. 6 Nobody's Perfect 82 Theatrical, effective electro-ballad. I love it when she speaks and half-whispers before she sings (in harmony with the vocoder). Madonna has created a sound style that is very expressive, even though it is heavily-treated with electronics and synths. Her vocoder-treated vocal comes through very sparse and bare, which is perfect for the mood of the song. Prudent, lovely use of robotic drum programming. 7 Don't Tell Me 86 Original use of drum programming and acoustic guitar sampling to form an electronic country song - 'country' in that it has a mood of being in the back-woods with a storm brewing upon a rugged landscape. Great compositional skills, awesome arranging, an innovative soundscape. Madonna in her 40s is showing much creative muscle, and is refusing to become dull and boring. 8 What It Feels Like For A Girl 78 Another interesting approach to a dance pop song - has a 'live' rather than pre-programmed feel to it, and a punchy bass. More good solid songwriting. Madonna has drawn criticism in this album for trying too hard to appeal to a young teeny audience - to try and be a 43 year-old Britney Spears - but the truth is Madonna is simply a genuine artist who can do what she likes and make it sound fresh. She is obviously a person who never feels old inside - and that's a fine attribute to have :-)) 9 Paradise (Not for Me) 81 This is another surprisingly amazing track...it is over 6 minutes long, but it feels like time passes so smoothly and like a journey where you feel "oh that was a quick trip". More expressive use of vocoder ("..i feel so high / i feel so down / high as the sky / down to the ground") - it's a nice slow groove in the style of Bjork but there's a sense of longing in the vocal.... of searching, of needing.....it's difficult to describe exactly, but it's a very compelling track for its 6 and a half minutes of atmospheric trip-hop. 10 Gone 80 Another well-written ballad that Madonna plays acoustic guitar on when playing live in concert. In concert, she even plays a cool jagged grunge guitar solo when performing the song "Candy Perfume Girl", from the "Ray of Light" album. She's great :-)) 11 American Pie 62 A cover of the 1971 Don McLean tribute to Buddy Holly. Madonna's interpretation of the song is to wrap it in bubbly electronica and give it a happy bubblegum sound, as opposed to Don McLean's ragged original sound. 12 Cyber-Raga 39 Not a focused composition, unlike Beatles compositions with Eastern influence, such as "Within You Without You", "Love You To", or "The Inner Light". This song, and her fluffy version of American Pie, would have been best left off this album for better songs and more brilliant tracks as Madonna is more than capable of, such as the classic "Beautiful Stranger". Why wasn't "Beautiful Stranger" on this album? I would have given that song a score of 92. Average song score for the album: 77/ 100If "Beautiful Stranger" had been Read more Less
