Pros: Once in 33 years a reunion at the Variety, Little Five

Cons: ambient beer bottle noise, underappreciative slobs running the aisles...

YES, the HGB sans Harold(e) got together after months of hard work on June 2 at the Variety Playhouse on a dark and stormy night for a tremendous psymphony of "Music to Dine Royally Upon". With the venerable guitarista Bob Ensley from the S...wimming Pool Q's taking the licks for Harold Kelling, the origial bandmates did something they hadn't done in 33 years: a live concert! It was recorded a NUMBER of different ways, notably with at least FIVE DV cameras; could we wish, hope and pray that the concert will find its way to CD? At the lobby table, Glenn himself offered CD pressings -done especially for the event- of the 1996 (autographed)reissue of MtE. I was one of the fortunate few to get one. It will NOT be on eBay! • All Music Guide

Hampton Grease Band's only album, now reissued as a double CD, is a one-of-a-kind item, drawing upon jazz, progressive/psychedelic guitar rock, and a generally surrealist bent to back Bruce Hampton's idiot-savant ravings. Comparisons with Zappa and Beefheart are really inevitable, though Hampton Grease Band really weren't on the level of those two fellow weirdos. They were definitely on their own wavelength, though, carving out a more guitar-oriented sound that skirted even closer to the lunatic fringe. The reissue's enhanced with a lengthy history by guitarist Glenn Phillips that's crammed with believe-it-or-not anecdotes from the group's fascinating career.

Hampton Grease Band

Hampton Grease Band may have ultimately been a band easier to appreciate in concept than to listen to in practice. They are also, for most listeners, a band that's much more fun to read about than to hear. For a brief period, though, they were offering some of the wackiest rock ever to be found on a major label. Clearly influenced by both Zappa and Beefheart, but more g... Read more
