A Soundtrak of awe and inspiration

    By Keat  Jun 23, 2005

Pros: The diversity of music and the connotive catharis from view the TV series

Cons: Price- the newly released collectors edition runs over $100

This soundtrack is best enjoyed after watching the tv series. As the music is played during the show, it perfectly complements the genius and simplicity of Carl Sagan's scientific exploration of all things. The ultimate collection of human knowle...dge should be standard viewing for all middle school children. Listening the soundtrack after developing an appreciation for the tv program takes you back to the awesome feeling of wonder and amazement that you experience passively while watching the program. The cd is means of passing into a transedental state of concentration and meditative enjoyment. Both the highly acclaimed series and the soundtrack reflect the impact that Carl Sagan left on the world. At the time of its publication, it was the most objective, positive, and well preseted piece of political and education machinery ever produced. Carl Sagan, who was undoubtably one of the most good intentioned and brillant men to ever live,"as far as we know", has inabled all of humanity the ability to experience a breath-taking enlightenment usually only experienced by those fortunate to be open-minded and educated. I highly recommend its purchase to anyone who enjoyed the series or any or Carl Sagans treasures. Read more Less

The Music of Cosmos presents the soundtrack to Carl Sagan's groundbreaking PBS series, and features pieces by classical and contemporary composers such as Shostakovich, Vivaldi, and Vangelis. As with the series, the soundtrack is comprised of six parts. "Space/Time Continuum" describes the intricate relationship between space and time with pieces like Vangelis' "Heaven and Hell, Part 1" and "Alpha"; Pachelbel's "Canon a 3 on a Ground in D" and "Spring" from Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" accompany Sagan's explanation of genetics, DNA, evolution, and consciousness in "Life." The precision of Bach's "Partita No. 3" mirrors the elegantly mathematical laws of physics and "The Harmony of Nature," while facts about space phenomena such as pulsars and black holes are scored by Hovanhess' "Symphony No. 19" and Toru Takemitsu's "Inside the Heart of the Universe." "Cataclysm," Sagan's depiction of cosmic disasters and evolutionary processes such as supernovas, features Vangelis' "Beauborg" and Str...avinsky's "The Rite of Spring." Finally, the triumphant conclusion of "Affirmation" includes Vangelis' "Ignacio" and the traditional composition "Bulgarian Shepherdess Song." Every bit as integral to Cosmos as Sagan's narration, this collection is a literate, intelligent soundtrack to science fact. - Heather Phares, All Music Guide Read more Less
