The Beginning of XTC's Artistic Journey

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 15, 2006

    Pros: Elegantly Textured,Moody And Ethereal

Cons: Certainly Not The Rawest Music XTC Ever Made

Speaking literally 'Mummer' is XTC's 'Sgt.Pepper'.It was made under similar circumstances-the band didn't want to perform anymore and decided to become studio based artists. The difference is where The Beatles reveled in psychedelic indulgance,XTC used the modern musical innovations of the 1980's to create a truely diverse musical soundscape. The best song is the romantic synth pop of "Wonerland"-wor
ks as great dance and chillout music. The beautiful instrumental "Frost Circus" has a similar feel to it.The only place XTC really rock out here is the closing "Funk Pop A Roll".Otherwise 'Mummer' alternates between the dramatic eastern feel of "Beating Of The Hearts","Great Fire" and "Deliver Us From The Elements" to great melodic pop such as "Toys","Ju
mp" and "In Loving Memory of A Name".Add yet more cleverly crafted tunes such as the jazzy "Ladybird",&quo
t;Human Alchemy","Me And The Wind" and the classic folksy charm of "Love On A Farm Boys Wages" and you have one of the best albums of the early 80's to be honest.

    Risky Business?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 8, 1999

This is the album where XTC stopped being a rock band and started being artists. This is the album where I stopped being an XTC fan and started being an XTC evangelist. It's risky business to go from the bang smash pow! of Go 2 and White Music to the evolved artistry of Mummer, glad they took the risk. Now if only they'd release an album that's just thier "Homo Safari" insturmentals... that and tour.

    their best unknown album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 22, 1999

No one ever mentions this album, but it is by far their best. This is xtc's breakthrough album where they stray fron their punk beginnings to the artistic formula that they follow now. Mummer contains many well thought out lyrics as well as melodies that are the precursor to the style of skylarking which always recieves such praise.
