The Beginning of XTC's Artistic Journey

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 15, 2006

    Pros: Elegantly Textured,Moody And Ethereal

Cons: Certainly Not The Rawest Music XTC Ever Made

Speaking literally 'Mummer' is XTC's 'Sgt.Pepper'.It was made under similar circumstances-the band didn't want to perform anymore and decided to become studio based artists. The difference is where The Beatles reveled in psyche...delic indulgance,XTC used the modern musical innovations of the 1980's to create a truely diverse musical soundscape. The best song is the romantic synth pop of "Wonerland"-wor
ks as great dance and chillout music. The beautiful instrumental "Frost Circus" has a similar feel to it.The only place XTC really rock out here is the closing "Funk Pop A Roll".Otherwise 'Mummer' alternates between the dramatic eastern feel of "Beating Of The Hearts","Great Fire" and "Deliver Us From The Elements" to great melodic pop such as "Toys","Ju
mp" and "In Loving Memory of A Name".Add yet more cleverly crafted tunes such as the jazzy "Ladybird",&quo
t;Human Alchemy","Me And The Wind" and the classic folksy charm of "Love On A Farm Boys Wages" and you have one of the best albums of the early 80's to be honest.

    Risky Business?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 8, 1999

This is the album where XTC stopped being a rock band and started being artists. This is the album where I stopped being an XTC fan and started being an XTC evangelist. It's risky business to go from the bang smash pow! of Go 2 and White Music to th...e evolved artistry of Mummer, glad they took the risk. Now if only they'd release an album that's just thier "Homo Safari" insturmentals... that and tour. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Mummer (Remastered)

  • All Music Guide

Mummer -- the first album to follow Andy Partridge's mental breakdown, which led to the band's retirement from touring -- is very much the work of an eccentric in isolation. The album is a collection that builds on the groundwork of English Settlement with gentle, acoustic songs that evoke pastoral images and peaceful times. There are moments of real inspiration, resulting in some of their finest songs -- "Love on a Farmboy's Wages," "Great Fire," and "Lady Bird" -- and the sound sets a pleasingly consistent mood, although the sameness tends to work against the lesser material. Only the out-of-place afterthought of "Funk Pop a Roll," a tirade against the music industry, breaks things up, recapturing the abrasive Partridge of past. [When Mummer was reissued on CD, six tracks were added to the middle of the album. While "Jump," "Toys," and "Desert Island" are welcome additions of pop confection, the atmospheric instrumentals "Frost Circus" and "Processions Toward the Learning Land" from ...the simply bizarre Homo Safari Series serve to disrupt the album's flow.] - Chris Woodstra, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

XTC

XTC was one of the smartest -- and catchiest -- British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding.
