Two slimy fat-cat legislators recruit Jefferson Smith, an innocent and staunchly principled Montana scout leader, as the state's new Senator, hoping to exploit his naviete and community pride to bring home pork-barrel funds. Once he ascends to Capitol Hill, however, Mr. Smith finds nothing but deep-rooted corruption in Washington, D.C., and, absolutely refusing to submit to cynicism, he tirelessly takes the message of the American people right to their out-of-touch representatives. Based on Lewis R. Foster's novel THE GENTLEMAN FROM MONTANA. Academy Award Nominations: 11, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (James Stewart), Best Supporting Actor (Harry Carey). • Overall:

    Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

    By David  Oct 13, 2004

Pros: one or two good lines

Cons: the acting and the pace of the story

Jimmy Stewart made some truly wonderful films in his great career, but contrary to popular opinion, "Mr. Smith Goesto Washington" is not one of them. It just does not have the appeal of "It's a Wonderful Life," or "Harvey...," oreven "Rear Window." It is stupid and juvenile; it is so hokey as to be utterly embarrassing. If the viewer wants a good political film, I suggest three from the 1960s: "Advise and Consent," "The Best Man," and "Seven Days in May." Read more Less
