MCA Special Products' More of the Tams the Impressions' Greatest Hits sparks the question -- where is the original The Tams the Impressions' Greatest Hits? It doesn't exist. That's a salient point, since the collection relies on second-tier Tams songs and front-rank Impressions hits (such as "People Get Ready" and "Amen"), resulting in an uneven listen, especially since the tracks alternate between the two groups. Nevertheless, the record is a good, entertaining listen, since the Impressions were brilliant and the Tams were very, very good, indeed -- and even if some of these songs weren't hits, they were still good songs. The result is a collection that's worth its budget price, even if it is nowhere near definitive.

Joseph Pope's gravelly voiced leads were their selling point. He was joined by his brother Charles, Robert Smith, Floyd Ashton, and Horace Key. They began on Swan in 1960, then landed their first hit wit... Read more
