Pro Reviews: Moonlit Castle

  • All Music Guide

The third release by shakuhachi virtuoso John Singer is a collaboration with the classically trained concert harpist Paul Hurst. Together they explore the world of traditional Japanese music, with a couple of like-minded original compositions included for good measure. The melancholic tone of the bamboo flute blends wonderfully with the lyricism of Paul Hurst's harp, which at times sounds remarkably similar to its distant Japanese cousin the koto. Moonlit Castle is a serene and peaceful album that succeeds in conveying the graceful sublimity of traditional Japanese music.
