A native of Durham, NC, Leander Pickett known as Money Over Sex, or M.O.S. was expelled from school and kicked out of his mother's house at the age of 16. Within two years, he fell in with a collective of artists, fellow MCs, and producers called Hot Block that became well known in Durham for their mixtapes. However, as his career appeared to be gathering steam, he was arrested and served a prison term. Shortly after his release, he met up with producer Ski Beats, but the progress on the duo's recordings was thwarted in the midst of a label shakeup between Elektra and AOL/TimeWarner. As he prepared to release material on Jive, he continued to work the mixtape circuit.
