Playing a tramp struggling to survive in a modern industrial society, Charlie Chaplin created with MODERN TIMES, one of the most elaborate cinematic critiques of the effects of mass production on 20th century life.     'Modern Times' has to be the greatest Chaplin movie ever made. The direction, story, script and everything else works so well. This was made in 1936 but it still has as much power over it's viewers as it did almost 70 years ago. City Ligh...ts was great but this is way better because it's not as 'sentimental'. It has all the perfectly timed gags and laughs you could expect from Chaplin and more. The extras rock too. From the documentares and 250+ picture gallery to Liberace singing 'Simile', this will not leave anyone disappointed. If you decide to buy a true classic movie from the 30's on DVD, make it this.     Modern Times is one of Chaplin's very best films. It's reminiscent of his earlier short subjects, in fact it's like four short subjects put together, you could even give them titles like: "The Factory", "The Jail", "The Night Watchman" and "The Sing...ing Waiter". But above all, it is a very funny movie and not as sentimental as "City Lights". Read more Less
