    Space Rock 101

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 16, 2000

For those unfamiliar with Dave Pearce's fuzz and drone-drenched psychedelic folk, Mirror may prove to be an interesting and comparatively varied introduction. Though atmosphere and texture define FSA's entire body of work and certainly the vibe of t...his album as a whole, each song on Mirror is marked with its own subtle distinction. Pearce underscores soft, acoustic songs like "Winter Song," "Rise" and "Chemicals" with elements of drum n' bass on while the drum loop that is the backbone of "River" almost makes it a rocker. He also gives a nod to '60s underground surrealist-folk hero Tom Rapp of Pearls Before Swine on "Space (1999)" and takes his finger off the distortion button long enough to allow his lyrics and soft voice to be heard (dare I say it) clearly on "Tides" and "Dust." Despite these progressions, FSA remains an indulgence for the stoner set and space rock die-hards. Read more Less

    Dissonance and harmony....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 4, 2000

Lilting folk-like melodies swimming underneath the surface of slowly evolving/mutating sonic landscapes. Dissonance and harmony couple together nicely throughout this series of recordings. A must-have for FSA fans, and a good (and gentle) intro to t...hose uninformed. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

The sweeping billows of sound that begin "Space (1999)," the opening track of Mirror, Flying Saucer Attack's first album of the 21st century, set the tone for this ride on the clouds. The blurring of lines between noises and notes, of sounds and music, give this album a soothing and ambient feel. Atmospheric guitars layer the background, simple bass lines provide the anchor, and sound effects take the sound further into space. Dave Pearce's gentle vocals keep the album a mellow affair throughout, except for the out of place "Chemicals," which unfortunately breaks the mood with its quasi-industrial feel. Some of the songs do seem to wander aimlessly, however, and Mirror occasionally gets tangled in its own loose web. Overall, these surges of sound are best enjoyed in the late evening or early morning hours, depending on your intention. Both results are great. Either you will enter one of your most relaxed states of sleep or will awaken as if by a wave of feathers. - Jason Kane, All Musi...c Guide Read more Less

Flying Saucer Attack

Formed in Bristol, England in 1993, the elusive avant-noise project Flying Saucer Attack primarily comprised the duo of singers/guitarists David Pearce and Rachel Brook, refugees from the group Lynda's Strange Vacation who formed FSA as an outlet for their interest in home-recording experimentation. Drawing influence from Krautrock, folk, and dream pop, they bowed with ... Read more
