From the Listening to the Minstrel Show

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 28, 2006

Pros: Dope Beats Dope Rhymes what more do yall want?

Cons: It didnt come out sooner.

I was in Alabama when I first heard these cats man. 9th Got mad boom on the wheels of steel or as Khrysis put it "the man who owns 2 microwaves". If you have never heard the listening though, you need to go get that too. The formula is raw ...and the chemistry is definately there. So good, they got (what was that) like 4 - 41/2 mics in the source and Phonte got the hip hop quotable for the verse he spit on "For You". Justus league is definately takin' over. But the question still remains...... Dope Beats Dope Rhymes what more do yall want? Read more Less

Few groups earn a majorlabel contract based on their producer's merits, but when Little Brother jumped to Atlantic for their second full album, The Minstrel Show, any cynic looking for a good reason would point to the increased profile of trackmaster 9th Wonder (JayZ, Destiny's Child). But it wasn't just 9th Wonder that made Little Brother's first album one of the best underground rap debuts of the new millennium; rappers Phonte and Big Pooh matched a smooth Southern drawl with upNorth smarts. Like their influences in the Native Tongues family, the trio cast a clever eye over music and culture, sniffing out hypocrisy and greed, then dismissing them with sparkling satires. The Minstrel Show presents more of the same, expanding the palette to a host of hot topics: R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" series, which gets skewered by the spoton "Cheatin"; exploitative urban TV stations (the album's main concept); and even the need for brandname clothes ("5th and Fashion"). And any fans who fe...ared that 9th Wonder's success would lead to a diluted or overly polished record have nothing to worry about; awash in '70s soul and mellow, slapping beats, his productions make the message tracks carry just as well as the humorous material. - John Bush, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Little Brother

Part of the newmillennium resurgence of alternative rap, Little Brother's inspirations were atypical for Southern hiphop: classic Native Tongues outfits like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as more recent torchbearers like the Roots and Black Star. MCs Phonte (b. Phonte Coleman) and Big Pooh (b. Thomas Jones) swapped rhymes with an easy chemistry, but the g... Read more
