Pro Reviews: Milton Jazz Concert 1964

  • All Music Guide

For a concert put on in Milton, MA (and released for the first time on this 1995 CD), several classic jazz veterans were teamed with some solid local musicians for a variety of Dixieland standards. Trumpeter Yank Lawson, trombonist Vic Dickenson, clarinetist Edmond Hall and pianist Dick Wellstood appear in a sextet for four songs (highlighted by Dickenson's witty growls on "Basin Street Blues" and a spirited "Hello Dolly") while trumpeter Buck Clayton stars on four other warhorses. Highpoints of the CD are on the two numbers ("At the Jazz Band Ball" and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue") on which the two bands are combined; in both cases Yank and Buck get to trade off hot phrases. It's a worthy release by the collector's club IAJRC.
