    This grooves!

Hip-Hop is not my main thing, but as a music retailer, I try to keep a wide variety in what I listen to. I bought this album knowing nothing about it, only because I found it on vinyl very cheap. I put it on not knowing what to expect, and really d...ug it. With the bass so loud it made the walls of my office shake, I quickly decided these records (it's a 2 LP set) were not for sale! The screenplays are a little cliche and corny, but that's really the only drawback to this album. Aside from that, it's solid and cohesive, with all tracks being pretty much equally strong. Militia is a crew, with 5 solid diverse MCs, which makes for nice variety, avoiding the monotany that many hip-hop albums fall prey to. The most standout track for me is "F**k A Title". (oh yeah, conservative parents and other uptight types - this album contains many instances of the eff-word and other so-called obscenities) That track's repeated line of "No hooks, no chorus, no singin', f**k dat!" really sums up Militia, making it clear that they're the real deal, not another crew of MTV pop sell-outs. Unfortunately, they were signed to Red Ant records, a label that really doesn't know how to promote this kind of music. I'd imagine that's the main reason that now, only 4 years after this album's release, it's out of print and has for the most part faded into obscurity. If you have only barely heard of Militia, take a chance and get this album. It's solid and you won't be dissappointed. That is, unless you offend eaisly, and if that's the case, why the hell are you shopping for real hip-hop? Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Militia

  • All Music Guide

Militia's eponymous debut album is a skillful fusion of hardcore East Coast hip-hop and funky West Coast gangsta rap that manages to be distinctive. From time to time, they fall back on both lyrical and musical clichés, but that happens only occasionally. More frequently, the Bay Area crew pulls everything together. The members of the crew come from all areas of the country, which helps give Militia an integrated sound. There's no stereotyping here -- there's West Coast funk, East Coast skills and Southern grooves. The innovation of the best moments makes the whole thing worthwhile.

Before meeting producer Emanuel Dean, Shawn "FMB" Billups had worked ... Read more
