Synopsis: Midaq Alley (1998)

Set in Mexico City's old downtown section, this is a character study of three neighbors, whose stories intertwine: Rutilio, a family man who fears his homosexual feelings; Susanita, a dreaming spinster who falls prey to a thief; and Alma (Hayek), a virgin who succombs to cocaine and prostitution.

    This film was way better than I expected. It is one of those films you need to see more than once so that you catch everything. Although this is a foreign (Mexican) movie, it has a very modern American 'feel', unlike a lot of foreign films. This fil...m is delightfully different in that it is seen through three different people's eyes -- yet everything comes back together with the well-planned storyline. I think they could have done more with Salma's character. I lost the 'personal connection' with her character by the end. Read more Less
