    Best SOAD Yet!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 14, 2005 | 13 out of 14 found this Mezmerize review helpful

    Pros: Everything

Cons: We have to wait 6 months for Hypnotize

I got my preorder copy on the 12th and I was blown away by this. I thought that if their was only 11 songs it wouldn't be that great, but every song could be a hit single. This album ties in the serious side to SOAD and the funny side. If you lik...ed any of their previous albums you will love this. My favorite songs are Revenga, Radio/Video, Violent Pornography, Sad Statue, Old School Hollywood, and Lost In Hollywood. I left out BYOB and Cigaro cuz most of you have heard them. BUY THIS ALBUM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!! Read more Less

Pros: Eacvh one of the gentelman performs MIUScal Miracles!!

    Cons: NO KIDDING, REALLY.

Think back an dlisten: when was the first times you ever saw System 10 and The Downs? Probably what 4 years ago? THAN you were like, OH NOW THIS IS SOMETHING I CANNOT BELEIVE. Listen to the passion they have return to the scene of music! IT IS almost... like being overwhelmed by an excitement that also frightens you -- like being at Roller Coaster Mountain at a young age with too much hot dog and soda pop for lunch but what the HECK ITS TOO late we are already on the roller coaster LOOK OUT BELOW! IT That's good!!! So listen -- this is hard rock music with someetimes a gentleness of attitude that makes you realize there is so much more to life then yelling about it. LIsten to the titles: SOUP OF AGES, WHO SAYS A MAN CANT WEAR PINK, OTHERWORLDLY EXPLOSIVE DESSERT RECIPE and the next to final song that is at the end, DUDE I CANNOT HELP YOU I AM ON BREAK. SO listen it is so simple. Click on the machine that let's you buy this CD, you will won;'t be sorry at all not ONE bit. ok!! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Mezmerize

  • All Music Guide

Adjectives like "ambitious," "jagged," and "startling" have always defined System of a Down, and their third official fulllength is no different. Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part the first side of what's essentially a double album. The records' packaging would even slot together, making the eventual Mezmerize/Hypnotize whole. Appropriately then, there's an intro to System's first new material since 2001's brilliant Toxicity. On "Soldier Side" Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian harmonize as they do throughout the record, and Malakian's guitar has a mournful, Eastern air. But it's just a lull before "B.Y.O.B.," a thrash assault pierced with rabid and incredulous screams. "Why do they always send the poor?" Suddenly the gears switch, and the song stomps in crunchy halftime as its lyrics riff with a sick grin on cultural ignorance. The government's lying, System's saying, but "Blast off/It's party time." The vocal exploration between Tankian and Malakian on M...ezmerize is a thrill they spur each other on like a twoheaded hardcore hero. Their intermingling voices make "Cigaro" more aggressive, frantic, operatic, and totally bananas; they'd be triumphant over the break in "Violent Pornography" if they weren't spitting out lines like "Choking chicks and sodomy." The fantastic "Pornography" is a rusty shiv of absurdity, another example of System's ability to effectively skewer society with little more than hyper guitar, blistering percussion, and weird turns of phrase. Their volatile mix of righteousness, wordiness, odd meters, and thrash has balanced System's activism since their selftitled debut, making them "unique heavy music" over the much more problematic "unique, heavily political music." And Mezmerize doesn't fail to be unique. "Old School Hollywood" essays the bizarre experience of a celebrity baseball game ("Tony Danza cuts in line") over keyboard effects from "Beat It" and a brutally simplistic rhythm, "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song" is more twistedtongue histrionics and explosive playing, and Tankian and Malakian's harmonies are the catalyst (again) for making "Revenga" a truly feral epic. System of a Down what's another adjective for "awesome"? - Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide Read more Less

System of a Down

Like many late-'90s metal bands, System of a Down struck a balance between '80s underground thrash metal and metallic early-'90s alternative rockers like Jane's Addiction. Their dark, neo-gothic alternative metal earned a cult following in the wake of the popularity of such like-minded bands as Korn and the Deftones.Vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassi... Read more
