Pros: Honesty and beauty in music for once

Cons: You wont like it if you have no taste in music

I loved this cd. It truly moved me. The crisp undulating tones of James maynard keenan resonate to the point of brilliance. This cd may be his best. Though not as hard as others this one is more honest. It has a rich and dark theme with songs like orestes that examine the bands name and establish the tragic apeal that continues through much of the cd. maynard wrote all twelve songs on this album and all are brilliant. I especialay love magdelena. He has away of spinning profanity into that special sacren sweetness that can feign being sacred. A sacred darkness. It captures the feeling of a religous experience it uplifts and is heartbreakingly beautiful and honest.

    Pros: Best Perfect Circle Album

    Cons: I love the vocals

This Alum has some of the all time bests tracks, 3,4,5,6, 5,and 6 are my favourites, and I rate Maynards vocals very highly. I think some of this music is peaceful. It's awsome stuff. I'd recomend it to a lot of people.

    Sea of Names

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 15, 2005

Pros: Maynard James Keenan's lyrical genius, and Billy Howerdel's musical genius

    Cons: none

The artists who contribute to A Perfect Circle read like a who's who of some of the most talented and successful bands out there (Smashing Pumpkins, TOOL, Nine Inch Nails, et cetera) , and the chemistry between these artists makes Mer de Noms - A Perfect Circle's debut album - an orgasmic blend of ecstatic melodies and lyrical genius. Every song is a unique, novel symphony of sound that crawls in your head and tickles your brain. This is NOT an album you can listen to once and possibly begin to take it all in. You have to listen many times before you can even begin to appreciate the complexity and depth that went in to making these songs sound the way they do. They are so intricate, so interwoven and complex, that each time you listen you discover something new that sends ripples of pleasure through your ears. It might help to look up the lyrics - some people have trouble understanding Maynard when they first begin to listen to his singing. Don't give up after one or two tracks or one or two listens!! I promise that if you aren't immediately sucked in and made a believer, with a little bit of open-mindedness all you have to do is listen a couple times and you will understand what I was talking about! Make sure to also check out A Perfect Circle's second album, Thirteenth Step!

    Pros: is

    Cons: good

do you guys realize that maynard james keenan from tool is in a perfect circle? so by saying tool sucks is pretty much saying that a perfect circle sucks also. and maybe you should look at the lyrics to tool songs more clearly to understand them..such as sober by tool. either that or maybe you just arent right for the music. a perfect circle and tool are both really good bands. you guys just dont know music.

    Not entirely good

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 29, 2003

Pros: 3 Libras = great song

Cons: Rest of the album = not so good

This album is good but not the best. The only song I love from this album is 3 Libras. 3 Libra's melodies and lyrics are just the best. Also, Judith is a good song but after listen to it too many time you kinda get tired of it. Unfortunately I don't like the rest of the album and as I said before 3 Libras is the best song from Mer de Noms.

APC: the best band in the world

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 15, 2003 | 0 out of 1 found this Mer de Noms review helpful

These guys...Ah, it's so hard to describe! I mean, Jesus, the band just practically made a new genre of music! I listened to every song over and over and over. My personal favorites are The Hollow, Magdalena, 3 Libras, and Thinking of You. I just love how it seems like I am falling into the music, with Maynard calmly saying the lyrics, and I'm swept away. I recommend this to anyone. I mean, if you don't like the fact that APC sort of insults the Christian religion, then don't get the album. But hey, I'm a Christian, and I find the song, Judith, to have some good points. I cannot wait for their next album, and I'm sure that they have just made history with this one.

    Thruth?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 19, 2002

I personally think this album is very well done and I find the artistic effort intelligent and interesting. Of course, people are going to say: "yeah but it's not Tool". well of course not! it's not supposed to be Tool. That's the beautiful part of It. Maynard formed this band to experiment with his lighter side (which he believe is in all of us) and try different artistic avenues without having to risk being accused of selling out. I think that it would useless to create a side project if it were only to sound like the original band. On the other hand, if Maynard stuck with his guns for years with Tool and never experimented, he would be labeled as boring. An artist will never be able to satisfy every one of his fans at all times and innersearch and trials can be a risky process for one's career. I think the blame is to be put on the record companies. By charging $15-$20 for a cd, they have made the customers much more critical and demanding. Think about it, are you willing to pay that price for an album containing 2-3 great songs, a couple of ok ones and a bunch that you don't understand (I don't like to say songs suck, since every one of them probably means a lot to the artist while just being insignificant and misinterpreted by the public). you might think I'm crazy but I speak from experience. i used to be one of those demanding customers since $15 is a lot to me. now I burn my cds and only pay for the blank copies ($1 per copie at the most) and I have become much more tolerant for music, which in turn makes me appreciate the art so much more. my belief is that file sharing is not the problem for the music industry (i still like owning the original cd better). If cds were priced reasonably, i would be much more open-minded. if you can buy a blank cd for $1, how much profit is made to reach the $15? I think it's ridiculous. to return to circle, I believe that the side project is a very intelligent concept for exploration and I revere Maynard's artistic choices. Maybe we all will once cd prices drop, or maybe we are just naturally spoiled: musical style remains, baah! boring! exploration and evolution, sellout!
My final thought will be that everybody is entitled to their own opinions and i hope this comment (I won't call it a review since I have no artistic abilities and am not a music critic. Of course none of the people writting these comments probably are) does not offend anyone. Peace to everyone,
a depressed person with an urge to write stupid things nobody cares about.

    Billy's BAD - but Maynard's THE MAN!!!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 1, 2002

A truly great album! Diverse & Lush with noises and screams, this album is as versatile as it gets. Naturally Maynard's drone like voice (which is awesome!) has an influence on the CD and even Billy Howerdel sounds a lot like Adam Jones. The best song on the album is # 5 "Orestes", with a memorabl solo that jumps back and forth of Maynard's depressed, angry tone.
Other hits include the opener, "The Hollow" & "Judith" (#4). A stunningly different track is #6 titled "3 Virgos" it could easily have been included on the MAGNOLIA soundtrack. The mood of the song fits right in with the movie, and would have been great had they included it on the soundtrack - "Oh Well!" as Maynard croons on # 6...

Magdalena (#2) and "Rose" (#3) also cap it off as truly memorable.

Josh Freese, Paz & Troy are amazing artists in their own right.

This could easily have been called TOOL # 3.
    Bloody Awesome! 10 Stars!!!

    1. The Hollow (HIT!)
    2. Magdalena (NOT BAD COULDA BEEN BETTER!)
    3.Rose (EVIL!)
    4.Judith (HIT!)
    5.Orestes (THE BEST TRACK EVER!)
    6.3 Libras (ANOTHER GREAT ONE!)
7.Sleeping Beauty (NOT BAD COULDA BEEN BETTER!)
    8.Thomas (EVIL!)
    9.Renholder (EVIL!)
    10.Thinking Of You (EVIL!)
    11.Brena (KICKASS!)
    12.Over (EVIL!)

I would have to say that the new Tool album top this one buy a little, but that doesn't put this one down at all because Lateralus is fucking out of this world. I'm proud to say, anyway, that this baby will always be in my CD case.

this album came out last year, and ever since then this has been one of my fav albums. Maynard is by far the best there is out there right now. IF this group ever makes another album, and i hope they do, it'll be absolutely amazing. But if they don't, this album will always be remembered as one of the best of 2000.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 20, 2001

This is the best album out right now. This record explores the human experiece and dares to be bold on the track "Judith". I love this CD and i would hope that people would allow Keenans lyrics to open thier minds and bring them to a higher level of consoiusness.

this album explores human life and tells the story of our existence through names.
