    Another classic

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 26, 2004 | 18 out of 21 found this Medulla review helpful

Pros: Takes risks in vocalise that hasn't been doesn't since the turn of the century

    Cons: none at all

Medulla has to be the most innovative, attractive, and poignant album released this year. Bjork travels through so many different spectrums of music, and suprisingly captures them with just vocals and bodily sounds. Although there are occasional inst...ruments played in certain songs, she leans heavily on the organicness and complexities of the body by replacing drums with beatboxing (a la Rahzel of the Roots) and strings and synthesizers with choirs (especially on "Pleasure is All Mine" and "Oceania" which was written and performed for this year's Olympics' opening ceremony in Athens).Like all of her projects, she dabbles in some sort of classical arrangement. Yet with Medulla, Bjork digs deeper into musicality and brings out far more than the best that classical arrangements have to offer; chord structures that come out of nowhere, modulations (which is new for her), and suprising time signature changes. Not only does Bjork focus on classical arrangements, she incorporates sounds of today's modern R&B and Hip Hop seamlessly. On "Pleasure is All Mine" she channels an early Timbaland influence as well as a taste of the Neptunes on "Where is the Line" and "Who Is It". She also gives us what we want on "Triumph of Heart" and that's to dance. This club-driven track (still made only possible by vocal sounds and beatboxing) is sure to be a staple at the clubs.I've always been a mild fan of Bjork (my knowledge of her goes back only to the Post days all the way up through Vespertine). But, Medulla has made me a complete follower. You MUST pick up this album next week. Read more Less

    Bjork Travels To Another Universe

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 26, 2004 | 17 out of 24 found this Medulla review helpful

    Pros: Beautiful Dark Enchanting

    Cons: Beatiful Dark Enchanting

Bjork takes us on a magical journey through voices and it definately feels like another musical universe has been created. At one point the album takes a violent turn into demonic territories, almost as if Bjork is orchestrating a battle between heav...en and hell. If your looking for lush pop arrangements then turn to "Selma Songs", and "Vespertine". "Medulla" offers a change to view Bjork's insides, sometimes beautiful, sometimes dark. All we know is Bjork is a living breathing creature walking this earth creating soudscapes from the distant future and the distant past. Read more Less

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 8, 2004 | 1 out of 3 found this Medulla review helpful

    Pros: its bjork.

    Cons: she's gone sour.

I awaited this album after being somewhat dissapointed by Vespertine. Only to find that she has traveled to another world where all she can do is use her voice. Don't get me wrong in the past i've really enjoyed her but now its not the same.... Some fans will approve of anything that she creates. She could taka crap on a plate and it would be art. Sorry. Please save your money. Read more Less

    Genius...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 23, 2004 | 0 out of 1 found this Medulla review helpful

    Pros: It's Bjork

Cons: Not commercial, but that's really a good thing

How easy it would be for Icelandic artist Bjork to play by the rules and record a simple project, radio-friendly and easily hummable? Obviously, this lesser challenge is just not a part of this ingenius artist's makeup. On MEDULLA, she's gone... even farther than her previous releases in pushing the boundaries of possibility when it comes to what most would call 'music'. Layers of voices, human beatboxes, indistinguishable vocal affects and minimal effects has placed this latest recording in a category all it's own. It's a daunting listen, even for those faithful fans who've grown to expect and accept all things Bjork. Still, it's musical in it's sheer ability to open up one's senses and demands to always be 'listened to' intentionally. Don't approach this one casually. Plan to sit and be still with your first listen, perhaps using this one as a tool for meditation, in order to fully enjoy what gifts tunes such as Oll Britan, Desisred Constellation and Triumph of a Heart (my favorites) truly are. --Brother Douglas of EdenDustMedia Read more Less

    Halloween Music

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 9, 2004 | 0 out of 1 found this Medulla review helpful

    Pros: It eventually stops.

    Cons: It will frighten children.

I like Bjork's music and I wanted to like this album but just couldn't. It's pretty bad.Imagine a choir of Gregorian monks, a 70's era Space Invaders arcade game and Yoko Ono on PCP. I'm not kidding. It is essentially an experiment... that didn't work out. The only way to enjoy this album is from a collector’s standpoint. If you must have every album Bjork ever released then you won't care how irritating the music is. Or, if you're a huge fan and even the worst basement recordings are gold to you.Don't take my word for it, find samples and listen to them before you buy this album. Its okay, even great artists like Bjork swing and miss some time. Pros: wonderful conceptive music with a number of catchy more accessable tunes than the last album

Cons: I suppose if you a die hard guitar fanatic you might be dissapointed, but then you would have always been dissapointed by bjork

She remains ahead of the mainstream, challenging her musical horizons to make another extremely interesting and beautiful album. Anyone who thought Vespertine was'nt her best work might be additionally dissapointed by this one. But, did anyone ...dislike Vespertine? definalty one of the most beautiful albums I had ever heard. Like the last one, this album improves with each listen. Read more Less

    Gotta be good!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 7, 2004 | 0 out of 7 found this Medulla review helpful

    Pros: It's bjork!!

    Cons: ...

I haven't heard this album yet, but I have everything else by the musically magical sweetheart Bjork, and she's all good! I'm very happy to see such great reviews, and I'm running out to get Medulla today. I'd also recommend at le...ast her first 3 albums, to anyone who loves a beautiful voice, futuristic sounds, cool beats and good writing and arranging. Bjork, in my opinion, is simply ahead of her time, but hopefully she'll gain more popularity as time goes on... she certainly deserves to!! Read more Less
