Love Riot's first album benefits from the ten-year songwriting partnership of singer Lisa Matthews and guitarist Mikel Gehl. When Matthews seems to revel a bit too much in every pop vocal cliché of the last 25 years, Gehl pulls her back down to Earth. Alternately, her melodies often serve to give greater shape to his strong and deliberate riffs. An off-center beat and ethereal melodies make the sad "Never Change" a truly remarkable song, and Gehl's "Lost in You" has both muscle and melody. The glossy, professional production, however, does the acoustically based band no favors. Two years later, the band would have greater control for Heaven Can Wait. This is, above all else, inoffensively edgy music for fortysomethings.
