Jimmie Lunceford commandeered one of the classiest and most sophisticated bands during the swing era; after Ellington and Basie, his outfit was considered by many to be the best of the period. This was certainly due to such top arrangers as Sy Oliver, Eddie Durham, Edwin Wilcox, and Gerald Wilson, and excellent players like trombonist Trummy Young, trumpeter Freddy Webster, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. This sampler of Lunceford's 1934-1942 stretch spotlights all these greats with 22 excellent sides, including "For Dancers Only," "Stomp It Off," "Margie," and "Tain't What You Do." A fine way to get a taste of some of Lunceford's best material.
