There's a surprising lack of actual drama in this book, but perhaps what is even more surprising is that we don't miss it. There aren't any scenes here of Jean Louis saving Marven from a real grizzly bear or from freezing in a snowstorm. The situation of a child traveling a long way to live by himself among a camp of lumberjacks, never knowing if he will see his family again, provides enough drama.
