It's never a positive sign when overwhelming schmaltz is a score's most distinctive attribute, but Martian Child offers little else to distinguish it from composer Aaron Zigman's other effortsfor that matter, its simple, studied melodies, textured guitars and dreamy orchestral passages are interchangeable with dozens of contemporary film scores, and absent the kind of thematic complexity or stylistic flourishes necessary to set the music apart, it falls utterly flat. Worse, Zigman substitutes saccharine for substance, as if hearttugging sentimentality is ever an equal for thoughtprovoking innovation.
