    Marley & Me

By Kelly Lee  Jan 12, 2007

Pros: Love covers a multitude of sins; One becomes used to chaos and misses it when it's gone

Cons: None; the sadness only adds to the sweetness of the sentiment

Marley had all the bad characteristics of my 7 dogs rolled into one - but her owner's love was stronger than any flaws. I had a hard time putting this book down. It drew me back to it and I felt a sense of loss when it was done that I would no l...onger be privy to the life of that family anymore. I recommend Marley & Me to anyone who loves dogs, wants a dog, or is experiencing the stress of living with a difficult animal or person in their life. I also recommend it to those who just love a good story. Read more Less

    Inspiration for Dog Lovers

    By blue_altec  Aug 10, 2006

Pros: poignant plot that would really touch your heart

Cons: its magic is only for dog lovers

This is a true to life story of the relationship of the author (with his family) and their Labrador Retriever. Its a poignant story of loyalty, trust and friendship that a not-so-well-behaved dog can have with his family. I like the book a lot becau...se I am dog lover. Reading it is like being with the family, as though you are there not just as a outsider but as a part of the relationship as well. So much so that you will also sense the same feeling of friendship with Marley, the dog. However, that same magic is its own pitfall. Dog lovers would rave about how they can relate to the story but other would have a hard time immersing themselves in the plot. And if that happens - you become an outsider. In the end, the outsider would not feel the same grief that the family felt - and that would ruin everything. For the story hinghes itself in the reader being able to feel the loss, and without it, it's not the same anymore. For me, I cried when I was reading the last part of the book - and it made all the difference in the world. Read more Less

Required reading before getting a dog...

    By Melanie  Mar 12, 2006

Pros: A poignant look at ownership of a flawed dog

    Cons: From puppyhood to passing

So you thought about getting a dog? Have visions of a perfectly obedient best friend? It’s so surprising to me that people who have never had a dog before think that getting a dog will be “easy” with little realization that there is some hard wor...k involved. This book is written extremely well, and gives highlights of living life with a flawed pet – yes accidents will happen, sickness will happen, chewing on things they never should will happen – but regardless of your expectations, the rewards are rich. For those who have dogs (or who have lost dogs recently), it is a wonderful story of the ups and downs of living with a dog. Grogan does a superb job of capturing of the emotional conflicts and frustrations, yet there is clearly love there for Marley throughout. For me, the end of the book was the most touching (yes, I cried. Shh, don’t tell anyone.). So why the required reading? Anyone who wants to get a dog ought to know the highs and lows, the starts and the ends of the whole process. If you can read this book and not be affected or touched in anyway, don’t get a dog.
