LONG BEFORE IT WAS HIP TO BE LECTER

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 23, 2005

    Pros: DIRECTOR MICHAEL MANN

Cons: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

KEVIN LUCERO LESS - PROFESSOR OF CINEMA, TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART SCHOOL. MICHAEL MANN, BRIAN COX AND WILLIAM L PETERSEN HAD IT DOWN LONG BEFORE IT WAS HIP TO BE LECTER. "MANHUNTER" IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS FROM THE MID 80'S AND STILL HOLDS THE KEY TO THE XEROX STYLE CRIME DRAMA. IN "SILENCE OF THE LAMBS" THE TONE IS DARK AND COLD AND IS THE ONLY CINEMATIC ELEMENT THAT PULLS THE VIEWER INTO FEAR. THIS "STIMMUNG" IS NOT USED IN MANN'S "MANHUNTER" BECAUSE HE UNDERSTANDS, MUCH LIKE HITCHCOCK IN PSYCHO, THAT A BRIGHT WHITE CLEAN ROOM CAN BE MUCH MORE SCARY THAN A DARK MOLDY ONE, BECAUSE THE SUPRISE IS IN THE ACTIONS OF THE MONSTER INSIDE THE ROOM. BRIAN COX ALSO PLAYS LECTER WITH MORE TRUTH AND SKIPS THE GLASS LICKING CLICHE OF THE PSYCHO KILLER IN "SILENCE OF THE LAMBS". WILLIAM L PETERSEN IS NOW WELL KNOWN FOR HIS CSI CHARACTER, HOWEVER HE WOULD PLAY THIS ROLE ALMOST 20 YEARS EARLYER IN "MANHUNTER" AND IT MAKES ONE WONDER WHY IT TOOK SO LONG FOR HIM TO BE CREDITED FOR HIS ACTING. MICHAEL MANN'S MANHUNTER IS THE BEST OF THE LECTER SERIES AND GOES TO SHOW YOU HOW FAR THESE "SILENCE OF THE LAMBS" CLOWNS CAN GO, STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS.

    Manhunter (original Red Dragon)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 22, 2003

Compared to the new release of the Hannibal Lector series Red Dragon, which is based on the book of the same name, Manhunter was released in 1986, and as far as sheer terror, and a very believable portrayal of Special Agent Will Graham by William Peterson(CSI), this original version of the movie has the exact same dialogue, but has an incredible soundtrack, and a very convincing Dr. Lector.Even though Peterson is nearly 20 years older, they should have used him for the remake opposite Anthony Hopkins, and used the same song soundtrack! Now that would have been a great movie!

    Movie Sucks (seriously its horible)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 5, 2003

I think the people that wrote these 5 star reviews work for the company that sells this piece of garbage they call a dvd. After wasting $40 for the 2 disc set, I got a crappy and a bonus disc which is just the same crap movie with basically a handheld camera instead of a professional one. PLEASE STAY AWAY!!!! Hannibal,Lams, and Red Dragon rock... this movie makes you sick...l8a

    Thumbs Up!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 26, 2001

Yes, Manhunter is the first film in the "Hannibal" series but should not be judged as such. Manhunter stands on it's own as an excellent story and good interpritation of the novel by director/screen writer Michael Mann.

In Manhunter we enjoy the fine detective story but also a horrifing look into the mind of a serial killer seeking spiritual transformation.

Tom Noonan turns in a fantastic performance as the killer which will, at the very least, give you the creeps.

    The first and the best....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 29, 2001

Manhunter, as more people are becoming aware, is adapted from 'Red Dragon' the Thomas Harris novel which first featured the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. I like SotL and Hannibal as movies as well as the books, but Manhunter is IMHO the best film of the three. The acting is spot on, particularly William Petersen as Will Graham and of course Brian Cox as the original screen Hannibal Lecter who plays the part with quiet menace. Unlike Cox's successor, you can believe he was once a noted psychiatrist rather than a monster with some manners. Special praise too for Michael Mann's direction and the superb soundtrack. Rent it, or buy it but also read the book for the full story.

    worth seeing & buying...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 14, 2001

This movie is a rare visual work in a long line of great movies by director Michael Mann. The review by "rbang" is very off, it's obvious that he doesn't know much about movies because he said that he saw "silence of the lambs" and then "manhunter." That seeing "manhunter" after "lambs" was like night and day. DUH! "Manhunter" was not a sequel to "lambs" or even a prequel, it's just the first time that we meet the character of "hannibal." If you enjoyed the movie "heat" with DeNiro & Pacino, then you'll like "manhunter."

    Well Done!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 9, 2001

In typical Michael Mann fashion, this movie is very visual, with strong use of unique camera angles as well as coloring. He also carefully chooses strong music that is appropriate for the circumstance. Above and beyond the style and music, this movie is genuinely thought provoking and intense. William Peterson as Will Graham is an intense forensic investigator who has to come to grips with his past and focus on the task at hand - finding the serial killer. I hope that he can reprise his role in the prequel that is supposed to follow Hannibal as Graham (according to Harris' book) caught Lecktor.

    This movie is AWFUL

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 27, 2001

This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a LONG time!
The acting was horrible, the whole story is ok i guess. But going from watching a masterpiece like Silence of the Lambs, to watching this one, is like night and day. Please, I beg of you, DO NOT RENT THIS FILM!
Dont give any more revenue to this horrible piece of filmmaking.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 17, 1999

My husband worked on this film so I'm very partial to it. Plus its a great flick. The story, lighting and effects are super. Michael Mann did a great job in Wilmington, NC, Washington, DC, Atlanta and St. Louis.
