Man @ Work - Colin Hay

    By Hamish  Sep 2, 2004

Pros: Will appeal to those who remember Men At Work

Cons: Some may not know Colin Hay is still producing fine music.

This is a very fine "unplugged" style album that features many of the strongest but not always best known songs from his time with "Men At Work" and a selection of impressive solo tracks. Having recently seen Colin live at an inti...mate gig during the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe this album really captures the essence of this highly talented writer and performer. The album features two new versions of "Down Under", both excellent. The second of these features his wife, Cecilia Noel( billed as the Queen of SalSoul) and the Wild Clams and is a fine Salsa-flavoured offering. For those familiar with the band Salsa Celtica(a Scottish Latin-American band, yes really!) then you are in for a rare treat with this bonus track. Other highlights are "Be Good Johnny" and "Overkill" but it's worth saying there is not a weak track on this album. This is a must-buy for your collection. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Man at Work

  • All Music Guide

While he'll always be best known as the lead singer for early ‘80s MTV darlings, Men At Work, Colin Hay has been issuing solo releases on a somewhat regular basis, ever since his former band's disintegration. But for his 2003 release, ‘Man At Work,' Hay has decided to take a step back, and rework several Men At Work classics. While it's not uncommon for classic rockers to rework their songs (the ‘unplugged' craze of the ‘90s, anyone?), the reasoning as to why Hay would issue such a recording now is a bit puzzling. While such acoustic Men At Work tracks as “Overkill" and “Who Can It Be Now?" are quite charming and worth hearing, the pointless rerecordings of “Be Good Johnny" and “It's A Mistake" (which are almost identical to the originals) are pretty darn pointless. Hay's nonMen At Work songs (“Beautiful World," “Waiting for My Real Life To Begin") are worth hearing, but of course, they're not up to the high Business As Usual standards. That said, Hay's voice is still in fine form all ...these years later, as it sounds as good as it did during his commercial heyday. ‘Man At Work' will only be of interest to the hardest of hardcore Colin Hay fan. - Greg Prato, All Music Guide Read more Less

Colin Hay

When he was 14, Colin Hay and his family moved from his native Scotland to Australia and in 1979, he became the frontman of Men at Work. Led by Hay's distinctive voice, Men at Work experienced a meteoric rise to stardom in the early '80s, followed by an equally rapid decline. The group disbanded in 1986, and the following year Hay released his first solo album, Looking ... Read more
