Pro Reviews: Mambo

  • All Music Guide

Hector Pellot, a native Puerto Rican, and Johnny Conquet, born in Brooklyn of Puerto Rican descent, are more likely to be known by musicians for their compositions than by the album-buying consumer. Nevertheless, each were right on at the time; comparisons to Noro Morales and Rene Touzet are applicable. Mambo features eight relatively fresh tracks, good sound (airy conga, clear vocals, trumpets, percussion), and a beautiful torso painting on the jacket. "Gallo Espuelerico," "Juana Maria," and others by Pellot really fly, with superior timbales, horns, and singing. "Moncho Timbalero" is fast and progressive. And Conquet's piano pieces always are wonderful. Connoisseurs of authentic, early Latin LPs will not be disappointed.
